I am a fully qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor and psychotherapist with 20 years experience, specialising in the psychodynamic approach. I work from modern, comfortable rooms in Brighton and Hastings as well as offering online sessions via Zoom. I believe that we are all influenced by our experiences and relationships in the past, as well as those we have in the present, and most importantly the relationship we have with ourselves. Past relationships and experiences can impact the way we manage stress and cope with difficulties, it also can impact the way we respond to others and our own self-esteem.

Hello, my name is Sarah, and I practice depth psychotherapy and counselling. My approach is transpersonal integrative, which means that I tailor my therapeutic approach to my clients needs. I draw on different theoretical models including the psychodynamic model, Jung, Rogers, and Gestalt. I help clients gain a deeper understanding of their self by working through blocks and difficulties, exploring why these may have arisen, and how to learn and move on from them.

Whatever the issues and problems we have to face, one question seems to come up whether we are aware of it or not, which is how much if any control do we have over the way we feel, especially when we feel very powerful or overwhelming emotions. Usually the bad things happen (or are said) when we are out of control and completely in the grip of our feelings of anger, jealousy, fear, lust, greed etc. However trying to remove or erase these feelings, an obvious and often tried solution doesn’t seem to work that well, usually they squirt out and can be even more damaging by being denied and buried.

From time to time everyone experiences stress, sadness, anger, relational conflict and grief which we often suffer alone. Accepting help from others can be difficult but maybe you feel you’ve toughing it out on your own for too long. Whether you are struggling with an identifiable trauma or you’ve reached a point where recurring feelings are becoming unmanageable; a course of psychotherapeutic counselling may help you make sense of what is happening and enable you to gain and maintain some stability. Feelings of fear, anger, rejection and lack of confidence are difficult areas and discussing them with friends too raw and personal.

Jungian psychotherapy, sometimes known as depth psychology, is a form of deep reflection. It isn't problem centred but it does help to resolve deep rooted problems. The things that affect our waking life may be hidden from consciousness and experienced as a bewildering array of symptoms that appear to have no obvious cause. To complicate matters, these symptoms may be emotional, psychological or physical. Jung viewed symptoms not as problems to be fixed, but as signposts pointing to the need for change. I work on the basis that our minds and bodies have a natural drive towards healing.

I am influenced by a range of modalities, especially existential philosophy, psychoanalysis, and Jungian psychology.
I work with the full spectrum of human pain and confusion, from feeling lost about your life circumstances to symptoms of neurosis and psychosis. One of the fundamental tasks of therapy is to create a space where we can meet ourselves – to discover who we are. This is what I ultimately strive to create for my patients, in the human encounter of the therapy room (be it online or in person). All life issues are explored together, in a spirit of acceptance, dialogue and openness. In psychoterapy we can cry, or laugh – sometimes at the same time. We are human to human, with all our complexity, different and yet similar, unjudgementally.

My clinical work is underpinned by Jungian psychology, psychodynamic and systemic principles and is supported by current neuroscience research.
So often people suffer in silence instead of reaching out for support. Whether you are looking for a therapist for yourself or have concerns about your child, teenager or family member, I will provide an engaging and individual approach. I am an experienced artist and art psychotherapist with a private practice in my home in Richmond. You do not need to be an ‘artist’ or ‘good at art’ to benefit from making and engaging in art therapy. It is not about producing masterpieces (although you may surprise yourself). And although all materials are included and their use encouraged, art making during sessions is not a requirement.

Drama and Movement Therapy, from a psychodynamic and jungian background, uses the creative arts and the body to explore, express and contain your personal stories, emotions, thoughts, memories and experiences.
I feel passionate about working with individuals that struggle to find what we call home and want to explore who they are and what they want. I understand that destructive and painful patterns in behaviours and thoughts serve an adaptive function. Together, we will explore what lies behind these protective mechanisms and build curiosity towards oneself. I also have a particular interest in working non-verbally, with infants and individuals with profound autism, developmental disorders and genetic syndromes.

I draw upon psychodynamic, humanistic, existential, and Jungian approaches to meet each client where they are, whilst maintaining a holistic and transpersonal perspective.
I am an empathic, gentle and heart centred practitioner. I bring these qualities to my work as a psychotherapist and yoga teacher. As a trauma informed practitioner, I make great efforts to facilitate a place of safety, without judgement, where you can share your story and gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your experiences. I strive towards a culturally responsive and racially conscious stance in my approach and consider this to involve my own ongoing personal work.

The well-known Jungian Analyst Marion Woodman says, 'the process not the goal is everything.' Similarly, I do not offer quick fixes, goals or solutions. I offer to facilitate a process, your individual process, in resonance with what's true and right for you - as that emerges. As a result, a starting point for therapy is me getting to know you: what events or symptoms have prompted you to reach out; what struggles, fears or hopes do you bring and what do you feel comfortable to begin to share about your life story?

As a therapist, I work with clients to help them deal with issues such as depression, anxiety and invasive thoughts. I believe that society is quick to label people and say “whats wrong with you?” whereas, I believe we should be asking “What happened to you?” My clients have included survivors of childhood abuse, neglect, sexual assault and those recovering from traumatic-based experiences that have affected their current quality of life. I offer bereavement counselling to help people navigate their pain and find their own way to make sense of their loss. I recognise that, as each person is unique, so is their grieving process.

Many people come to therapy needing support but not being sure how therapy can help. Life may have become difficult to cope with or feel unhappily limited. You may be seeking to understand why things are the way they are; you may be uncertain about what changes are needed, or your capacity to make them; perhaps you just need to talk to someone not directly involved in your situation. My approach is designed to meet all of these concerns, beginning with supportive listening, facilitating insight into your situation, and ultimately supporting you to grow and nurture your inner resources to meet the challenges you face.

Counselling is for anyone who feels they need help. That help could be coming to terms with a particular issue in your life or learning to manage difficult and upsetting feelings. I provide a safe and confidential environment where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Although support may be available from family, friends and colleagues; it is often helpful to step outside of these relationships and speak to a professional who has no other emotional involvement in your life.

Jungian Counsellors

How does Jungian therapy work?

Jungian therapy, also called analytical psychology, focuses on a patient’s inner experiences and unconscious mind. Exploring a person’s unconscious mind can be achieved through several means, including the analysis of memories and dreams, and through physical exercises, such as art, dance, and word association.

How long does Jungian therapy last?

Jungian therapy is an intensive treatment type. Because its goal is to understand a person as a whole, including the unconscious aspects of them, treatment can range from months to years. Since patients learn the theory behind Jungian therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have completed.

Is Jungian therapy effective?

According to studies, many patients find success with Jungian therapy, and the century-old treatment has a devoted following. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving relationships, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. Improvements in problem areas seem to continue even after the end of Jungian therapy, as people are able to continue working on themselves using the tools they’ve learned during the treatment.

Is Jungian therapy evidence-based?

Jungian therapy is theory-based, derived from the theories of Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist often called one of the fathers of psychology, along with Sigmund Freud. Jung developed his theories from observing the problems of patients, and developed many theories of how the mind works. Subsequent psychological research has determined that Jungian therapy can lead to significant improvement in most patients.
