Firstly, I’m so glad you’re taking this step. I know how scary it can feel to reach out when you’re depressed, anxious, traumatised, stressed – or however it is you’re feeling right now. Whether you’re struggling with longstanding circumstances, reeling from a recent event, or you’re confused with your emotions … you’re doing the right thing by seeking help. As a fully qualified counsellor to post-graduate degree level, and a registered member of the BACP, I believe the best therapy is open, honest and human.

You might find yourself here because you are dealing with an issue that feels overwhelming or you might want to take some time and space to talk about something that has been bothering you for a while. Counselling offers a safe, non-judgemental and confidential space to explore things. Counselling works, not by fixing people, but by supporting you through your own truths and aiding you to trust and understand yourself. It is an entirely safe space where you can truly be listened to and understood without any judgement by someone not involved in your every day life.

The pandemic and lockdown saw a dramatic increase in social isolation and loneliness, but it also saw an increase in people reaching out for help from counselling and psychotherapy. As a joint-qualified counsellor and social worker, I have seen this change first-hand. It’s okay to recognise that you are feeling overwhelmed and need help; it’s okay to realise that you are stuck in a pattern of behaviour that you know is doing you no good; it’s okay to recognise that there’s something in your life that you want to change. As a Person-Centred therapist, my job is to work with you to create a space from which change is possible.

TL;DR I mostly work with people dealing with anxiety, depression, and/or OCD stuff/intrusive thoughts, to better understand what's happening and find ways to improve things. I continue to learn to better support the people I work with, particularly around GSRD and neurodiversity.

I believe that the therapist and client come together as a team to work through issues that may stand in the way of you reaching your potential. Through my training, I have mainly used Transactional Analysis, but also have some experience working in a solution-focussed way and like to work integratively as each person is an individual who may like to work in a different way. I work with people on a range of issues, but find that I work with people with anxiety or depression most commonly, and pride myself on working hard to make people feel at ease.

Hello, my names Ciara. I have worked with children and young people for 10 years in schools, social care and as a online and in-person counsellor for 11–25 year-olds. I work with several issues including anxiety, depression, self-esteem, friendship issues, family problems and bereavement. Young people find me relatable, down-to-earth, calm and caring. I empower young people to talk about what is important to them and support them in learning new things about themselves and finding new ways to manage their feelings and problems. In my spare time, I enjoy walking my dogs, baking and watching Netflix series.

Online therapy is an easy and convenient way you can access therapy. I have been working remotely since before the pandemic providing support from people who have needed help. I have found that I am able to get the same results online that I would have face to face. I offer counselling for 50 minutes for £55 and EMDR for £55-85 for 50 to 90 minutes.

Hello; I am an experienced therapist committed to your growth and helping you navigate a range of challenges and life issues. I believe that with the right support, most of us can make changes to improve our situation, recover our 'mojo', and find answers or peace of mind. Are there areas in your life you’re finding difficult, or where you feel overwhelmed, stuck or lacking in fulfilment? These might include: relationship/trust issues; managing anxiety and stress; improving your self-esteem; navigating life changes or difficult experiences? Or, maybe you'd like some support in your journey of self-discovery and personal development?

I mostly work mostly with men struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, OCD & PTSD, relating to their life experiences (both past and recent) and what may be keeping the problem going. The therapeutic relationship is proven to contribute to 50% of success in therapy and so I prioritise the relationship with my clients from start to finish. I mostly use CBT and EMDR but have training in other models to enhance therapy (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). My style of therapy is evidence based, has a clear goal and provides my clients with the tools to overcome their problems.

I have two areas of specialism. One is working with adults, who are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. This could be in relation to your job, health or relationships with other people. The second is working with parents of young children, when parenthood becomes tricky for whatever reason, or when children struggle with anxiety or activities of daily living (such as behaviour, emotional regulation, social skills, sleep, toileting, etc.)

I'm Gemma. I'm a clinical psychologist with a passion for working with families and wider systems around people. I work with couples, and parents who are struggling with the behaviour of their children, particularly aggression or other risky behaviours. I also work with couples who are experiencing significant levels of conflict and harmful or abusive behaviour. Sometimes, my work is with parents who have separated and are trying to work out how to reduce the impact of this separation on their children, or repair or reconstruct relationships that have become strained or distant.

At certain points in our lives, we might find ourselves in what may seem like an unbreakable cycle of self-destructive behaviours, overwhelming emotions and a sense of disconnect to those around us, or perhaps even within ourselves. If you’re reading this, it is likely that you currently find yourself somewhere within that cycle or you may have feelings of anxiety, depression or low self-worth. You may be experiencing relationship difficulties, intrusive and obsessive thoughts, self-harm, child-hood trauma or grief. Whatever the reason may be, I just want to firstly remind you that you are not alone.

Hello! I specialise in working with women who have depression, anxiety, stress, anger issues, addictions, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, or who wish to explore and deal with trauma or abuse from their past and the impact it is having on their lives today. I have expertise in and I am certified in the clinical treatment of clients who present with complex psychological trauma. I believe the key to healing is in supporting you to transform how your mind, body and soul remembers what has happened to you. This involves bringing to consciousness your patterns and supporting you to heal, change and grow.

What if you accepted every part of yourself, even those you hide from the world? What might be possible? Modern life can be challenging, with its demands, expectations and technology, but self-discovery can lead to learning, growth and a greater sense of ease. I can be your calm companion as you explore the areas of life that need attention, helping you connect with others and feel more belonging. My approach is person-centred and acknowledges how childhood experiences shape our adulthood, so that therapy will partly involve coming to terms with the past and how it affects the present.

I have a keen interest in working with issues relating to self-esteem and shame. Overthinking, constantly comparing yourself to others, people-pleasing, and holding high expectations for yourself that are impossible to achieve (perfectionism), to name a few, can all be symptoms of low self-esteem. These beliefs and behaviours can cause difficulties in your relationship with others and most importantly, yourself. It can feel impossible to break the cycle or know how to move forward. I can support you to make sense of your experiences so that you might develop self-worth and find a way through that works for you.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in Manchester?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
