Depression, fear, anxiety and other mental health issues are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. I also specialise in gender identity Exploring your gender identity can be a very difficult time. There are many obstacles to overcome, and it’s only normal that you may experience emotions that you cannot make sense of. You may experience different feelings, such as feeling confused and alone, depressed and anxious, angry and frustrated or even fearful and scared. I like to work with clients who are ready to do 'the work' and understand that therapy is not a quick fix. Clients who are reflective and understand what they want from their therapeutic journey, and are ready to explore different phases of their lives including, early family, adolescence, and young adulthood. I like to work with people who are open to exploring their past relationships and dynamics and understand how these foundations established certain thoughts and behavioral patterns .

Warmth, empathy, non-judgemental acceptance, scientific rigour and humour are at the heart of my approach to therapy. I follow core CBT traditions which put the client and therapist on an equal footing in a collaborative partnership, with the client as the authoritative expert in themselves. I aim to debunk and demystify, strip out jargon, and explain transparently how I work. CBT aims to give clients a therapeutic fishing rod, not just a fish, so that clients are helped to become CBT experts, their own therapists for the future. Therapy can be challenging, but more often it should be healing, uplifting, enriching and fun.

Sometimes, life hands you a tornado that brings turbulence and instability and sometimes you are faced with issues which are difficult to handle alone and as a result, you need a little help navigating through life trials. When we are faced with tough times, it can be difficult to handle our feelings or locate what we are feeling and why.

I support people with anxiety and/or chronic pain to live a more balanced life. Anxiety can be debilitating and overwhelming. I will work with you to understand what life is like for you and to offer new perspective and ways of coping. We often 'block' thoughts as a coping strategy, and whilst this can be very useful, it can increase anxiety. If you experience physical symptoms such as headaches, IBS, joint pain or fibromyalgia, your body may be literally holding the weight of your anxiety. We can consider whether a more holistic approach will help you–exploring the connection between your physical symptoms and your anxiety.

I work with infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, and their parents. My expertise lies in parent-child relationships, anxiety in early childhood and adolescence, ASD and trauma. I believe that both the parent and the child are integral to the therapeutic process. Sometimes the parent will be present in the therapy room, and at other times, the child and the parent will attend separately. The medium of therapy with the child depends on their age; for younger children, therapy involves play and play-based activities, gradually transitioning to a more conversational approach as they grow older.

Life can be tough, and sometimes you can be overwhelmed by seemingly impossible problems. I specialise in helping adults dealing with the challenges of caring for others, or who are bereaved, or are studying. It can be an enormous help when a trained, non-judgemental person, independent from the people around you, really listens to you. My work helps you find a positive way through your challenges, thoughts, and feelings. This helps you manage the complications of life which can lead to stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression if they are not addressed.

As a psychodynamic counsellor and hypnotherapist, my approach to working with clients is rooted in psychodynamic theory, which emphasises the exploration of unconscious processes and the influence of past experiences on a person's current thoughts, feelings, and actions. Here's a general outline of how I work with my clients: I shall meet with you, listen to you and together with you establish our therapeutic relationship.A safe and trusting working relationship. Once we have this we shall be ready to start exploring deep and often sensitive issues. I shall help you explore your unconscious thoughts, feelings, and conflicts.

The Koru is a powerful symbol in Māori culture from my native New Zealand, representing new beginnings, growth, and the uncurling of the fern leaf. This same idea of growth and renewal can be found in the journey of counselling. My aim is to help you navigate this journey, to support you in finding new ways of thinking and being, and to empower you to make positive changes in your life. Any of us at any time can find ourselves struggling to cope and it can be hard to believe there’s any way back.

Jewish Counsellors
Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?
Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same background to be able to work together, but a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond with individuals from a range of backgrounds, as they will have experience tailoring their approach to each client—and will be prepared to acknowledge and consider the effects of cultural forces, such as discrimination, that may contribute to that client’s concerns. With a professional who has such training, a client should feel comfortable discussing sensitive issues without feeling that they need to self-censor.
How can I recognise an effective Jewish therapist?
As with members of any religious or ethnic group, just because two people happen to be Jewish does not guarantee that they will share the same values, knowledge, or experiences. A Jewish client seeking a therapist who shares their cultural identity, or for whom it’s important that a therapist share their religious beliefs, may want to discuss a professional’s Jewish background with them before beginning therapy. For someone who seeks justification for major life changes in their religious tradition, or in biblical writings, finding a therapist who is comfortable framing guidance in that context may be especially valuable.
Would a Jewish therapist have unique training?
No, but they should have the same training and certification as any other mental health professional, as well as experience with a range of evidence-based techniques such as cognitive-behavioural therapy or mindfulness-based therapy. A therapist with this type of experience should be able to help any client feel comfortable and safe, which is essential for a therapeutic alliance. Once this is established, a potential client may want to find out more about the therapist’s Jewish background.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with Jewish clients?
A client can directly ask a therapist if they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and if so, whether these individuals sought counseling for faith-related issues or marital or familial issues in which their Jewish background was a factor. A client may also wish to ask a potential therapist whether they incorporate Jewish teachings and values into their own professional work.
Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Jewish therapists?
The directory of Jewish therapists includes professionals who have opted to share their cultural background on their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their background, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with Jewish clients and/or communities.
