It's hard to get through life unscathed. We all feel moments of despair, weakness and frustration which can lead to deep, lingering sadness or the sense that something is not right with the world. However this manifests itself - through anger, anxiety, depression, loneliness, paranoia - a person can be built up again, validated, listened to and ultimately move forward.
I have written numerous feature articles for the BACP's Private Practice Journal which I hope show my love of this sector and my desire to understand things on a deeper level. I have counselled people from all walks of life (musicians, bus drivers, civil engineers, pilots, police officers, garage mechanics) and one thing stood out: we all struggle at times.
My mode of counselling is existential psychotherapy, which put simply means exploring clients' lives - the bigger questions around meaning, isolation, freedom and death. Thinking through clients' values, how these shape them and whether they've been thrown off track, forms the central crux of discussion; where clients want to be and how they are fulfilled.
