I have been in this field for 30 years, accrediting with UKCP in 2000. I trained in Core Process Psychotherapy at the Karuna Institute, now in Bristol, but then in Devon, and would describe the work I do as mindfulness-based psychodynamic psychotherapy. We may view psychotherapy as a way of helping you deal with symptoms which are distressing you, however, this is only the beginning of an answer. What are these symptoms expressing, indeed, why these particular ones? What we come to very quickly is the person who is experiencing these symptoms, a person in a world of others.
What does it mean to be a person, and to be suffering as you are? From the very beginning, we are thinking, and feeling, about the relationships in your life, and the meaning you have made of what has happened to you. We can then creatively discover, and make sense of ourselves, becoming more fully alive, and the selves we really are, in the process.
