My name is Adama and I am a Person-Centred Integrative Counsellor. Sometimes in life, we hit a crisis point and it can be a scary experience. We find ourselves dealing with issues that can cause extreme emotional pain or issues that makes us feel uncomfortable. We feel lost, trapped and we feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. However, going through these experiences also shows that we are human beings, that sometimes we need help. Sometimes, all that we need is someone who supports us and respects our views. Unsurprisingly, the idea of counselling can be quite daunting, especially when we don’t know what to expect.

People begin counselling for a variety of reasons including difficulties within relationships, mental health concerns, feeling overwhelmed, or to regain a sense of direction. Sometimes a life event has taken place and prompted a loss of stability. The common denominator is a desire for change, within the individual or their environment. I provide a warm, confidential and non judgemental space for self reflection and exploration, and support my clients to build on their resilience, resources and confidence.

Sometimes you might feel stuck and that you are repeating the same patterns making you feel anxious, overwhelmed or losing your spark. This is where expert psychological help might be needed to help you to remove psychological barriers to live a broader and deeper life. I’ve worked in the NHS and other mental health services for over a decade. So I have worked with most psychological problems and a broad range of clients. My particular interest lies in guiding and encouraging people towards self-actualization and the integration of their fullest potential in whatever sphere of life they are engaged. This process may be seen as a journey, which we share together for at time and requires only ‘the willingness and the courage to be’. To participate joyfully in life is the goal at the heart of psychosynthesis therapy and coaching – and its achievement often comes in unexpected ways. We focus on developing your potential at all levels of being - body, feelings, mind and spirit - and on your deeper centre of identity as the source of true relationship.

I believe experiencing difficulties is part of being human, something we all encounter at various points during our lifetime. What gets in the way of living life more fully - relationships with friends/family/partner becoming strained; experiencing a traumatic incident; growing up in an environment which didn’t feel nurturing and supportive or which hurt you physically or sexually; someone you loved or cared for has died; living with chronic illness; feeling stressed at work or as parent; reaching a pivotal age and being unsure about the future; needing to make a decision but finding it hard; feeling ‘off’ and not being sure why.

Sometimes we all need additional support to navigate difficult times and making a decision to seek help for our personal problems can be daunting. I believe in creating a safe space to work together, where you are the expert in your own experiences and I have the experience and expertise in psychological theories and techniques. I believe that by bringing together this expertise we can work together to enable you to achieve your unique personal goals. Some of the relationship problems I work with include communication issues, affairs and betrayals, family issues, parenting issues, separation and divorce.

People seek therapy for different reasons and at different stages of life. Usually therapy is sought when stress has outweighed the ability to cope, or usual ways of coping have become less effective. Common reasons for seeking therapy include work stress, relationship problems, anxiety, worry, low self-confidence or depression. Some people will have experienced feelings of distress for many years before feeling able to seek help.

Counselling helps us think about what is happening currently in our lives. I will listen to your story and work with you in a supportive and containing way to make sense of what is currently causing you to feel depressed, anxious, stressed or worried. In validating the importance of your feelings, it helps us to work together to explore and think about possible ways forward.

Have you reached a point where you sense you just can’t carry on feeling this way? Maybe it’s a recent breakup, or a build up of feelings that’s just all become too much to cope with on your own. Perhaps you are carrying a silent pain that you wish the people around you could see. Maybe you are tired of not feeling understood by those closest to you. I wonder if you have lost your trust in others, and reaching out for help often feels impossible. I specialize in working with people to make sense of their past and how it is affecting the present. You are really not alone, and I would like to help, your feelings do matter.

Clients approach me when they are seeking greater fulfilment in their lives. Anxiety, fear, and stress, can sometimes affect the relationship we have with ourselves and others . Clients always need to know that they are listened to and taken seriously. This is achieved by helping clients to become more tolerant and kinder to themselves. This is what I believe is the basis to my style of Psychotherapy.

I believe our childhood experiences form who we are in our adult relationships, we carry with us the traumas we experience in our lives, these can manifest themselves as psychological and physiological problems, we have to survive so we bury the unpleasant feelings, they are buried alive and want to get out, we suffer, experiencing anxiety, depression, mental and physical illness, the internal and external voices are overwhelming. Counselling is an opportunity to address these feelings, to sit with emotions that may be unfamiliar. I know counselling can help because I have seen many individuals break the cycle.
