If you are looking for a safe, non-judgemental, welcoming space to explore what life has thrown at you then you have come to the right place. We all need time and a listening ear to help us deal with 'life' at some point. If you want to discover your true self then you have come to the right place. I came to private practice after many years working in post-16 education. In both careers I am privileged to help and be alongside people who are negotiating their next steps.

Sometimes it's really hard to work out why we feel the way we do. Sometimes we just don't understand how things are for us and the reasons we have got to the place we are at. It can be helpful to have someone to speak to and allow us time and honesty to work out what is happening. If you are looking for a genuine counsellor also with a sense of humour - this is allowed by the way - then please get in touch today and let's start working together.

You may be feeling stuck in patterns you understand intellectually but can’t seem to shift. Perhaps anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, or a deep sense of disconnection keeps looping no matter how much insight you gain. You might be high-functioning on the outside, yet internally exhausted, overwhelmed, or quietly carrying experiences that your nervous system never fully processed. Does this feel familiar?
If you’ve talked it through, analysed it to death, and still find your body reacting like the threat never ended, you’re not broken — your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do.

It could be that you’ve become stuck worrying about the future, or you’ve got some big stuff in your head that’s getting in the way of moving forwards and it’s time to do something with it so that you can move on. Maybe there is fear and anxiety of making change, or you feel stressed and sad? Or maybe there is some unavoidable unhappiness in that is in the background of your life?

Hello. I am Emma. Generally people come to me with anxiety, low self confidence and depression. Sometimes this feels like life is a struggle with no direction and purpose, or your head feels full of thoughts, and you feel restless. I have success with clients who want to find themselves, their path and understand the world in which they live. This often means working with existential questions; Why am I here? What is the point?
I work with trauma, and recognise how scary this can be for people to face.
My work with couples often focuses on communication.
I am a trained Mindfulness teacher and this can form part of our work.

I am an integrative-relational practitioner and Wild therapist. As your therapist I can offer myself as a supportive guide as you step into the process of self-discovery. Together we can explore the areas of your life that are keeping you stuck or frozen and begin to loosen the knots that keep you locked in fixed, unhelpful patterns. Years of relational pain and trauma can accumulate in our bodies and minds leaving us with permanent feelings of anxiety, tension, depression and chronic pain or lead us to conclude that there’s no hope for finding what we need to thrive.

Do you have extremes of feeling: anger/numbness; fear/fearlessness; afraid to be alone/pushing others away? There is hope even if your brain tells you there isn't, and it is my job as a counsellor to help you see it. It is usually buried somewhere under layers of shame, self-criticism and feeling not good enough. We will work together to help you feel a deeper sense of fulfilment and control over your life. With the right support and tools, you can overcome challenges and lead a more balanced and satisfying life, even if now it seems impossible.

Hi, I'm Sarah. I have over 18 years experience as a counsellor. We all have times when we find it hard to cope. Counselling can help you understand why you think, feel and act like you do. It can help you develop positive strategies to get what you want out of life. How we think, feel and behave is part of being human. Problems can arise when we get 'stuck' in negative thought patterns; when our feelings become overwhelming; when our behaviour is self-destructive and doesn't result in us getting what we need; when we worry about the future, dwell on the past and find it hard to live in the present.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
