I work on a humanistic basis with people with different diagnosis.
Therapy is not always easy, and can at times, feel distressing. Your experiences may be something that you have shut away or tried to ignore. Unfortunately the feelings and thoughts around these experiences do not go away and can often become or feel out of our control. It is important to note that we do not need to visit anything that feels too scary for you, and we can still work around your experiences without directly re-visiting them. This can be re-traumatising and this is not something we need to do in order for the work to be successful. On the other side of this I have seen many people find healing and acceptance.

Art therapy enabled me to process my own past traumas, it has given me the empathy and determination to help others to see more clearly what is going on for them in the present, often through gaining a better understanding of their past. I work mostly with adolescents (aged 12-25), and primary/junior school children. Helping them to process issues such as anxiety, bullying, stress, identity, behavioural issues, grief and bereavement.

Any of us can feel stuck, sad, lost and seemingly unable to move forward. Making sense of these feelings is critical to our both physical and emotional wellbeing. Impact Wellbeing works with you :an individual, a group, a team to explore ways to positively impact your world. Something small can appear to have led to a spiralling out of control by you /someone you care for /work with; you may feel unable to understand why someone self harms ; making sense of why someone took or tried to take their life by suicide, and there are few places to go to; we are here to help you make sense. What impacts your wellbeing matters.

I am trained in four main psychotherapy methods ( Gestalt, Humanistic Person Centred therapy, TA and IFS parts work ) this means I can tailor our sessions to suit you and your needs.
You may have been troubled by something for a while and have tried talking to friends or family, but how you feel hasn’t changed. You may be kept awake by anxiety or stress but you can’t put your finger on what it is that is keeping you awake. Or in fact you do know what is troubling you but have never been able to talk about it. Major changes in your life may have created a loss within the person you once were. Perhaps you feel that you lack purpose and that everything is hopeless. We as humans are very good at pushing things down inside, locking them in a box and marking them DO NOT OPEN, but eventually the box breaks open.

Therapy is individual, not off the peg… When we feel that those around us do not understand us, or do not accept us, it can feel like a lonely, uphill struggle. I have a long-held interest in what makes us all tick, and the strategies that we can access to better manage the ups and downs in our lives. It has become evident to me, through many life changes, that we work much better together than we do alone.

I can provide specialist treatment to children and their families where they may be behavioural issues that are affecting their relationships. I can help to understand the root cause of behaviour and to encourage heathier ways to communicate needs. I can help strengthen parent-child and parenting relationships by sharing my in depth knowledge and insight into behavioural and relational needs. This essentially builds greater awareness and "attunement" of one another, helping to create more harmonious and healthier family relationships.

I’m Jay, here to help you with your anxiety, self-limiting beliefs and be your best self. As a gay man with ADHD, I understand the struggles that come with being part of a minority community. I have experienced first-hand how it feels to be held back by debilitating anxiety, fear of abandonment, rejection and low self-worth as a result of the messages that are all-too-often received as an individual living in what can feel like an isolating world.

Perhaps you have landed on this page because things aren’t going well for you and you want to look at things another way. It could be your body is telling you something is not right. If you are finding that the things that used to work for you no longer do, it seems logical that more of the same is not going to get you somewhere different. Maybe I can help? I work somatically, which means accessing and enhancing the connection between mind and body. It is an aspect that’s often overlooked in talking therapy, however the body holds meaningful insights into our story and helps us to re-frame the way we look at things

Humanistic Counsellors

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualisation and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
