I have a masters degree in humanistic, integrative psychotherapy and am a full clinical member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy.
You might be struggling with something difficult in the here and now, such as the loss of a loved one, or the breakdown of a relationship. Or perhaps you’re aware of vague, underlying feelings of sadness, anxiety or anger. Maybe you feel trapped in a cycle of repeated disappointments with partners, friends and careers and don’t know why. Whether you know what the problem is, or even if you don’t, therapy can help. It’s an opportunity to explore yourself; to examine feelings, thoughts and motivations and gain understanding - the first step towards navigating a different, happier course.

If you are struggling with depression, difficulties in relationships, grief, anxiety or trauma, then the process of counselling can be deeply transformative. I offer a human-to-human therapeutic relationship. I'm non-judgmental, deeply empathic and compassionate; with years of experience as a humanistic therapist. I walk alongside my clients accompanying them on their journey of healing, awareness and change. I do this by deep active listening and bring anything on the edge of awareness into the light, through a client-led approach.

Welcome. Reaching out for support in a time of difficulty or to address issues from the past can feel challenging and unsafe and you have now taken the first step. For all of us, life is multi-faceted with many ups and downs. The process of counselling can be transformative, helping you weather past and present storms, feel safer and more connected with yourself and others, and simply live a more meaningful life with greater satisfaction. I am a BACP registered trainee Counsellor with several years of client experience and also over 15 years working as a mentor and an NHS Midwife. I work in a ‘humanistic-integrative’ manner.

My approach to Counselling is Integrative, drawing from Psychodynamic and Humanistic model.
I offer a safe and confidential space where you will have the chance to share your problems, your difficult feelings, your pain and your life story. Talking about our life honestly and openly, with an empathic and non-judgemental therapist can be a deeply healing process. Having a space where we can be fully ourselves, where we’re invited to slow down, breathe and investigate our inner world and our emotions is necessary, today, more than ever. We live busy lives and for many, it is difficult to stop and notice, most of the time, what is going on inside us. As we reconnect to our feelings and our essence there is an immediate sense

March 2024. I have some availability for couples and individuals. I'm an integrative therapist (humanistic/existential/psychoanalytic) also influenced by the cognitive awareness that comes from mindfulness. However, my practice is influenced just as much by my own lived experience and my doubts about the efficacy of the medical model of dealing with mental health issues. I've been practising since 2011 and have a broad range of experience of dealing with many aspects of human distress and suffering including depression, anxiety, self-esteem, trauma, bereavement and loss, and problems in family and other relationships.

As a humanistic, integrative therapist I draw on different theories to find what resonates and makes sense to you.
Are you feeling stuck or lost? Something isn't right or you want more from life? People come to therapy because of many different issues: feelings that are hard to bear, finding the same situations or relationships keep repeating, wanting change, wanting to find a new way forward. Psychotherapy offers a way to create change from the roots up, exploring yourself at depth to gain greater insight and awareness and to free yourself from patterns that no longer serve you well.

I am in the final stages of training for my Level 6 diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling - which simply means that, alongside a strong belief in the restorative power of the human relationship, I have studied a number of therapeutic techniques from which I can draw as we work through what is important to you.
Asking for help can be very daunting: sometimes it’s hard even to articulate your thoughts, let alone work out how to find someone who might be able to help make sense of it all. I understand this. I’ve been an advocate of ‘talking therapy’ for many years and I know how comforting it can be to share what’s going on in a space that feels safe, supportive and kind. In fact it is my own experience of being a therapist’s client that has led me to the journey I am now on.

My way of working is grounded in the humanistic and integrative approaches to counselling and is rooted in the belief that when given the right conditions, we all have the ability to find our own answers to what may be troubling us.
For me, counselling is about offering you a welcoming and trustworthy space to pause, to reflect and to explore what is going on for you in the here and now. There are no rights or wrongs in counselling and people access counselling for many different reasons. It is a space where you can tell your story in your own words and expect to be heard with compassion, honesty and respect. I have experience of working with a broad range of emotional experiences, (relationships, identity, family life, work, anxiety, stress, low mood, past trauma & loss) and helping clients to find clarity, move forward and regain a sense of control.

Hello! My name is Sophie and I specialise in counselling adolescents and young people (ages 13-30). I believe in, and practice from, a holistic, humanistic approach. Your experience is unique and valid, and there is no one-size-fits-all definition of what is "normal" when it comes to mental health. As we are all unique people, therapy is also not a one-size-fits-all relationship. I will work in a way specifically tailored to you.

Humanistic Counsellors

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualisation and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
