I am an experienced counsellor -offering Individual psychotherapy. I also work with EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing), a very effective and proven approach for the treatment of trauma. My approach to therapy is integrative. People are diverse and ways of facing and resolving problems vary from individual to individual I find that sticking to just one fixed approach would be forced and simplistic. I work drawing from different theories and approaches what feels best for each unique individual experience.

Most people feel overwhelmed and 'burned out' at some point in their life. Often we know what the problem is, it might be work related, personal or a combination of things. Maybe, it is less clear, a general awareness of feeling low and unhappy much of the time without really knowing why. It can be invaluable to have somewhere private and confidential to talk, to be able to think more clearly about what isn't working, the reasons why and how things could be different going forward.

I am an experienced Child, Young Person and Parent Psychotherapist based in Harrogate. There are times when we all struggle emotionally. For children and young people it can often be difficult to understand their own emotions or be able to express their thoughts. Sometimes this leads to overwhelming and confusing feelings, with behaviours that seems stuck, possibly resulting in low self-esteem and struggles with relationships. Counselling and creative therapy provides a safe and supportive space to explore emotions, feelings, develop an understanding of our thoughts whilst building communication skills and emotional resilience.

As a Supervisor & Psychotherapist, over 35 years of my adult life have been dedicated to working with others in their quest for well-being. You may be dealing with a recent, disturbing event leading to anxiety, depression & stress & could do with someone to help you move on? Or perhaps you have a difficult choice to make & need help to see clearly? Or perhaps you just don't feel good & don't really know how this came about? A difficulty in a relationship or within the family? Whatever the cause, we can work together to unearth whatever is getting you down so that you can move on.

I have been working with people experiencing unhappiness in all sorts of ways for many years and never yet come across anyone who's distress or anxiety or sadness didn't make sense once we had talked about it for a while. Every individual is different and special in my book but has in common the need to be heard, recognised, valued and understood. As a person-centred counsellor those four things are at the heart of my practice. Whatever your concern or difficulty, sharing what is on your mind and in your heart in a safe space is the start of healing and self acceptance. I work online and by phone as well as face to face.

If it is important to you and/or making you unhappy, then that is a good reason to come. I work as an integrative counsellor, which means I have developed my approach from a variety of theories. I believe psychotherapy to be a unique and collaborative process based upon the relationship between therapist & client. It allows for one to openly explore and experience a range of thoughts and feelings in a safe and containing space, with someone trained to help understand and make sense of them. I work from a person centred approach where needs are addressed with non-judgement, understanding, empathy & confidentiality. Through this, one can address problematic behaviours, thoughts and emotions, gain further potential and productivity, as well as develop improved insight and meaning whereby increasing overall quality of life.

Are you struggling with life and having difficulty finding hope for your future? Do you feel good emotions or are you just numb or angry? At times we struggle to find joy and fulfilment in life. Was childhood difficult for you? Our childhood shapes the rest of our lives and learned reactions impact our relationships with others. Are you tired of the same thoughts and circumstances repeating? Do you feel stuck and unable to move on? All of us have our own way of dealing with things but unhealthy habits can lead to us feeling trapped. In therapy we can develop awareness, break the self defeating cycle and make good conscious choices.

I am a Doctor in Counselling Psychology, with over 19 years experience of working as a therapist. The decision to start therapy is not always an easy one, and everybody has a different reason for wanting to attend therapy. It may be recent circumstances which have caused you upset, stress or discomfort, or life long issues which you now feel you would like to address. It may be that you are feeling uncertain, or stuck, and not entirely sure why. Exploration of these issues together with a therapist could help you develop an understanding and move forward in life.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counsellors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
