I welcome hearing from all new clients, but I have particular experience in bereavement, sexual abuse and pregnancy, birth, early parenthood (sometimes called the perinatal period) and baby loss. Has something happened to you that you feel like you should be able to cope with, but find yourself stuck, not able to move on, feeling frustrated or ashamed by your response? Perhaps that's because you've not had a space in which you can say the things you need to say to someone who is not connected with what happened. I will welcome how you really feel with warmth, respect and compassion and we will collaborate on how things might change

I offer Face-to-Face sessions from The Practice Rooms (Sheffield S10, in the UK). I'm also able to offer Online Sessions, and sessions over the Phone. The main modality of psychotherapy that I practice is CBT, but my training also includes some Freudian theory, which I draw from in practice. I specialise in sleep interventions, and working with people who are/have been in abusive relationships. As well as these specialities, I also work with many other mental health issues. My clinical approach is goal focussed, and is tailor made for each client. I also use neurological and biological theories to inform my practice.

I will offer you the time, privacy and support required to explore aspects of your life you may feel you need to understand better or areas in which you would like to grow. Somewhere impartial and unconnected with your everyday life and as someone with who you can share thoughts and feelings. I work in an Integrative Counselling approach which has the basic assumptions that we are naturally social beings with the ability and wish to relate externally to others and internally to ourselves. Hello, I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, CAT Therapist and Coach. I am passionate about working with people in the way that they find most helpful. We can all find ourselves at a point in our lives when things are not how we’d like them to be. We can be caught up in negative patterns, experience difficult symptoms (such as struggling with sleep or anxiety, feeling low or stressed) and have difficulties with our relationships, work or our health. We may have experienced something traumatic or stressful that we struggle to cope with or find ourselves caught up in a negative situation that we don’t seem to be able to escape.

Life can be hard and in our most challenging moments it can be difficult to reach out to those around us for help. That's where counselling comes in. I offer an unbiased, empathetic, warm, non-judgemental space to explore what is holding you back from reaching your true potential.

Hi, I'm an integrative counsellor and I draw from relational approaches including person centred, with the aim to create conditions of trust, safety and honesty and a collaborative working relationship where clients might feel free to establish and work towards their own goals. I value difference and individuality and may draw on a number of other approaches to best fit the person or the presenting issue. Counselling may feel like a big step and it can feel challenging but it can also help to enhance self-awareness, self-understanding and begin to create the possibility for different choices, or simply self-acceptance.

I am Helen & I'm an Accredited Integrative Psychotherapist & Counsellor. I know that it takes a huge amount of courage to seek out counselling. I recognise that & will provide an authentic, non judgemental approach to exploring whatever it is you might bring to therapy. An integrated approach means I draw on a number of specific therapies that can treat each client in a variety of situations, rather than having a single approach. I believe a therapeutic relationship & trust are of key importance in therapy work & have a down to earth, but highly compassionate approach, often taking a trauma informed approach to counselling.

The bravest thing we can do when things get hard is ask for help. I have been working with people going through crises ranging from depression and anxiety to relationship break down and trauma for the last 12 years and have had the privilege of seeing people find hope even in the midst of difficulty. I work in an integrative way, incorporating aspects of cognitive-behavioural therapy, person-centred approach and attachment theory to offer clients the tools that are most useful to them. I aim to give clients a safe and confidential space to explore the causes behind their difficulties, as well as working with them to find solutions.

I run a small private practice alongside my NHS work, offering longer term weekly psychotherapy. There is no specific list of difficulties people come with. Distress can express itself in our lives many ways, through our bodies, minds, feelings, relationships (or lack of) or in illness. I work with people who feel they would benefit from developing a better understanding of their patterns of relating to themselves and others.

My training is in person-centred and experiential psychotherapy and counselling. In addition to this, I have 28 years experience as a Registered Mental Nurse, working primarily with people who have substance use problems. I completed an MSc in Person Centred and Experiential Psychotherapy in 2017 and have worked in an NHS staff support service as a counsellor since then, alongside my private practice. My approach is based on offering a compassionate, non judgmental approach within a safe environment in the hope that this will allow clarity, reinforce current coping mechanisms and foster future growth. I charge on a sliding scale.

For some time now you might have been struggling to make sense of how you are feeling and wish to talk things through with a professional. This could relate to difficulties with your mood and some behaviours you are not happy with and want to explore and work on these. Perhaps this was because of a recent event, or something that is related to your early childhood experiences, or even a combination of different life circumstances. You may be thinking that despite already seeking help for some of the issues that you have been facing, you feel unfulfilled and think that something is missing in terms of healing.

Taking the time to come to counselling is a commitment to yourself, can be incredibly hard work and often takes great courage. Whatever your focus for therapy, I will offer you compassion and hold the hope for you when you’re unable to see that things can, and will, get better. My personal experience of life – and death – has taught me that we are each unique individuals with diverse experiences, impacting us in different ways. What helps us through those difficult times can be different from person to person, and it can change as we come across new challenges. I will stay alongside you whilst we navigate these challenges together.

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
