Are you feeling that you need a supportive relationship to help with issues in your life? At different times in life we may feel overwhelmed, alone or stuck and it can help to talk in a non judgemental setting. You may be considering therapy for many reasons and the first step is to just make contact. This can bring feelings of nervousness but it can also be a very exciting moment. You can ask for the help and support you need. It’s very important that you feel completely comfortable with your counsellor, that they are a person you can share all of yourself with.

Counselling can help us in a number of ways; by changing our outlook on life, by increasing our self-awareness which can help with anxiety and confidence; by helping us come to terms with past trauma or loss or by simply improving our emotional and mental well-being. My aim is to provide you with a safe and confidential space in which to explore all aspects of your life. Whilst my job won’t be to give advice, I will listen without judgement and guide you to finding the solace that you need. I have experience of working with young people, neurodiversity and those within the LGBTQ+ community. I work in person, online or via telephone.

My name is Harriet Schofield and I really believe in the potential for counselling to change lives. More than I in 4 people access counselling or psychotherapy at some point in their lives (BACP, 2014), therefore if you are unhappy or life feels like a struggle, you are not alone. I understand how frightening it can be to feel stuck and like there is no way out, but I want you to know that if you are ready for things to change, then they can, however difficult things are feeling now.

This could be due to: Feeling low, hopeless, lonely, or depressed * Feeling anxious or afraid * Suffering with stress at home and/or in the workplace * Suffering with a long term physical/ mental health condition * Experiencing relationship problems * Loss of a loved one through break-up, divorce, or death * Traumatic events in our past which are still troubling us and preventing us from moving forward * Wanting to change a behaviour (diet, exercise, smoking etc). I can help you to cope with, manage, and improve the issues you face.

Hi, I'm Nicky. I can help if you are struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, relationship issues, or coming to terms with long-term health issues. You might be new to kink, experienced, or living a 24/7 BDSM lifestyle. Perhaps you’re confused or worried about your fantasies and fetishes? Or you might be a kinkster looking for help with something else entirely. Whatever brings you to therapy, you'll want to work with a therapist who understands and accepts all of you. It’s the same with non-monogamy and polyamory. You may be new to non-monogamy and want to talk things through before opening your relationship. If you’re already non-monogamous/polyamorous, I can guide you through challenges like negotiating agreements, poly-saturation, jealousy, envy or communications problems.

Is life feeling overwhelming?...Are you feeling stressed, anxious or stuck in a rut? Sometimes life can feel tough, painful or confusing! At times we understand why these feelings have arisen such as through bereavement, family, relationship or work problems, but often we may ask: ‘Why am I feeling this way?’ Or we may just know that things are ‘not right’. These feelings will have a big impact on our relationships, work or ability to enjoy even the simplest things in life which can lead us to feel alone or isolated! Now is the time to stop struggling alone in the hope that things will get better on their own, and make a change!

The aim of counselling is to promote healing and assist clients to take the next steps forward in their lives. Whether the issues stem from unresolved historic life events, acute trauma such as bereavement, separation or abuse or general depression and anxiety. Counselling can help a client to find their way when feeling lost, with the support of a reliable, benevolent and empathic person by their side who can gently challenge, encourage exploration and hold the client through their journey.

My practice is LGBTQ+ affirming.
I have completed a rigorous, three-year postgraduate-level psychotherapy training at Oxford University, and I am currently conducting academic research into best practice in psychotherapy, also at Oxford University. For over a decade, I have had the privilege of working in a wide variety of pastoral and therapeutic roles; in the business world, in universities and schools, and in the charity sector. I bring this wealth of knowledge and experience into my work with each and every client. I believe deeply in the transformational power of the therapeutic encounter, and in our capacity to work together to drive towards growth.

I specialise with the LGBT+ community, including their family and friends. I can offer a non-judgemental, gentle, accepting confidential space for you to share your issues and concerns, knowing you will not be rejected or discriminated against. I have lived experience of transgender identities, as my son is transgender. I have witnessed the high mental health conditions, suicidal ideation, including self-harm, and loss faced by LGBT+ individuals that I have counselled, along with the hurdles my son has encountered during his transition. I would like to walk with you along your pathway, and consider myself privileged to do so.

Hello, I am a warm, interactive therapist, keenly interested in finding how I can guide & support you to understand you, your relationships and experiences with increased self-compassion and understanding. The complex human system adapts to the environment from a place of survival and some of those adaptations can result in feelings of being too much or not enough at differing times. My areas of interest are relational & complex trauma, neurodivergence and supporting those from the LGBTQIA+ communities. Whatever your hopes are for therapy, even if you not quite sure what they are, my role is to ensure you feel heard and understood.

Sometimes we need help navigating the challenges that come our way. That’s where I come in. No matter how hopeless it feels, bring it to the safety of the therapy room and we'll find a way forward for you. Therapy with me is a place to slow down, tell your story, and expand your awareness. You might discover parts of yourself that you couldn't see before, like the roots of a tree. It's a safe space in which to take risks and experiment with saying, feeling and doing what you may have struggled to before. As an LGBTQ+ therapist, respect for difference & diversity in all its forms is at the heart of my work. www.brighton-therapist.com

LGBTQ+ Counsellors

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
