I am an Edinburgh-based counsellor with experience of working with a variety of life challenges, from stress and anxiety to low mood and relationship difficulties. I use a pluralistic approach, which means I tailor sessions to your own preferences and goals. In particular, I draw on methods from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Person-Centred Therapy. I provide a compassionate space, where you can consider your life experiences openly, whilst also exploring possibilities for change. Please email me for more information or to book an appointment.

I offer therapy to individuals and couples facing difficulties with their relationships, life and career choices. I believe communication, or lack of, is often at the root of many problems. It can be difficult to express our feelings and often we don't feel that we are heard or understood by the the important people in our lives. It may be that you have low self esteem and find relationships of all kinds difficult. You may be scared or perhaps you don't feel valued or cherished in your relationship. I will help you to explore the reasons behind this and work with you so that you can become the person you would like to be.

Do you feel like something is holding you back from fully enjoying relationships? Is fear of rejection preventing you from letting people in, and starting new relationships? Is something pushing you away from the bonds you crave? Do you feel misunderstood and lonely? Are you curious about why relationships keep ending in the same way? Feeling stuck? Relationships shouldn’t suck!

My name is Niamh, and I am a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. CBT provides a structure which helps you to explore your emotions, thoughts, behaviours and move towards a more manageable tomorrow armed with insight and self-awareness. I offer a space for individuals to address the difficulties they are encountering and teach practical tools, techniques, and skills to help people overcome the issues they are experiencing. CBT is very effective when working with specific therapy goals like managing anxiety or moving out of a period of depression. It is recommended for many issues including PTSD, OCD, eating disorders and addictions.

The first session is an opportunity to hear what brings you to therapy. We will assess the level and impact of the difficulty you are facing on your life, which will create a baseline that we will use later to monitor progress. We will then focus on finding out what you would like to gain from our work together. Often, clients know what they do not want, but identifying what they would like to change is harder. My role is to help you with that. Studies show that awareness of your needs is the first crucial step in the process of change

Sometimes for whatever reason life can become difficult. Often, we can understand and recognise the reasons for this difficulty. However, there are other times when we don’t understand why we feel troubled – we just know that we do. I believe that in either case talking about it with a trained professional would help. As a trained counsellor I have experience in helping people to process and cope with a wide range of issues.

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile. Maybe you’re looking for psychotherapy for yourself, or for someone you care about. In the 34 years I’ve been a practicing psychotherapist I know that people usually try a variety of things before they finally reach out and contact a professional. It feels awful, frustrating and overwhelming to feel stuck. One of the things I love about my work is coming alongside someone and helping them find their unique way of becoming free from that stuck place.

Hello and welcome! I'm Nicoletta, a qualified therapist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I offer in-person or online sessions if you prefer the comfort of your own space. My approach is based on the core principles of trauma-informed practice which means that I work within a non-hierarchical framework that offers safety, choices, collaboration, trustworthiness and transparency. As we do not live in a vacuum, I firmly believe in the importance of exploring sociocultural, environmental and economic factors that contribute to the origin and maintenance of psychological distress.

I offer a safe and facilitative space for you to think about what you need in order to feel better. An important part of that process is the relationship we develop and I will be with you each step of the way. I will listen, empathise, wonder with you, as well as laugh, cry, and get angry. Life is incredibly difficult at times. We could most likely all benefit from a space where we can share ourselves, our thoughts and feelings, and be shown acceptance. More than that, be shown care and understanding of what we are going through. If you feel that you would benefit from that kind of space, then please get in touch.

I believe mental health is just as important as physical health, the two are intricately bound together. In a non-judgemental, warm and supportive environment, I will help you to understand where the problems you are experiencing have arisen. We will work out why they have become so problematic and hard to deal with. I will help you to find strategies to cope better and tools to help you unpick patterns and to move on in your life, feel stronger and more content. As with any problem, the sooner it is acknowledged, the sooner you can begin your recovery. This is true of emotional and physical issues, as well as practical.

Psychotherapy can be beneficial for more than just relief from psychological difficulties, trauma, or crises. It can also facilitate personal development and growth. By providing a confidential and compassionate space, psychotherapy enables individuals to explore their inner selves and reconnect with neglected aspects of themselves. Acknowledging and accepting these parts can be difficult to face alone. However, the therapy process can provide a sense of safety to work through these challenges and explore new ways of being.

You may know exactly what you want from counselling or it may just be a feeling that something isn't right. It might be issues arising from the past or events that are affecting you right now - whatever it is, I believe talking about it can make a real difference. Counselling can feel quite daunting at times and I will be there to listen with warmth and empathy; to be alongside you when there are tough times and to laugh with you when life feels a little lighter. Working together, we can explore what's bothering you and perhaps look at other ways of coping with life so you can move forward with confidence and optimism.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
