As an actor/performer for 20 years, I spent the majority of my time looking into what makes people tick. Why do we do what we do and what do we get out of it? These questions are very rarely easy to answer about ourselves and this can lead us to feel life is unfulfilling or lead to a myriad of mental health issues. We can get anxious and depressed from life. I use my experience in understanding others as a way of conceptualising what you want and how you might achieve it. I will never tell you what to do, but I will absolutely stand beside you whilst you build the strength and self-belief to do what you need to for yourself.

As human beings we are complex. We may have emotional responses which we believe are shameful or embarrassing, causing us to deny them. Depression, anxiety and stress can take hold in our daily lives. We may feel stuck in the one place and too overwhelmed to know what to do or where to ask for help. This, alongside our jobs, families, relationships, bereavements, and the pressure of life can feel overwhelming. Some of us may have struggled with our mental health for years, for others, these hardships may come out of nowhere. We may have experienced traumatic events in our past that are affecting our present.

Just Human Therapy is a humanist, feminist, LGBTQ+ affirming online counselling service based in Edinburgh. Going to therapy can feel tough, so I aim to make it as approachable as possible. If you are going through a transition that feels difficult, would like support working through something specific, or simply know something doesn't feel right, therapy is a space you deserve to work through things. Often this isn't a quick fix, but an explorative process to come back to who you are and what you need. If you're struggling with low mood, lingering trauma affects, or obsessive worry, I can help you figure out what's going on.

Therefore, by collaborating together and combining some of my skills with each client's goals, positive change happens. I’m a qualified post grad CBT therapist, Yoga instructor, and studied islamic psychology (Sufism) for 17 years. Life at times can feel a little over whelming, we can lose perspective and fall into a pattern of unhealthy habits, sleeping too late, emotional eating, drinking too much alcohol, and in constant worry. These behaviours may be your coping strategies to help you feel better but aren’t so helpful to your physical and mental well being resulting in feeling anxious and depressed. Having an outside perspective on what’s going on in your life can really help refocus your mind and realign your life style with your core values.

Common thoughts that lead people to come to counselling include the following: "I can't get rid of my anger." "Will this grief never end?" , "Why can't I form meaningful relationships?", "I can't bear living with this anxiety", "I can't see any point in anything.", "Why am I drinking so much?", "I feel so stressed at work all the time." and "I often feel that life is not worth living." When such thoughts and feelings seriously affect our ability to enjoy life then it may be time to think about getting help.

Hello, I’m David. A very warm welcome to my page. Life can be really tough and challenging, particularly in these current uncertain times. Our tricky minds are often good at allowing us to become overwhelmed by our thoughts and emotions and this can make us stuck in certain behaviours and struggling to make sense of things. You may find yourself feeling anxious, low in mood or feeling stuck but not sure how to change things. Whatever may be going on for you, it can really help to have someone to talk to impartially to give you the space to talk through your difficulties, gain valuable insights and work towards your goals.

Life is a series of changes, often bringing loss and pain but also the seeds of a positive transformation. Even if you're unsure how to move forward, a theme can emerge. Counselling can facilitate a new understanding of ourselves, our different relationships, our place in the world. By reassessing hopes and fears, we can work towards the difference we want to experience. Alongside general counselling, I have specialist experience in post-natal depression and traumatic emotional and sexual abuse. My approach, however, is to treat every person without presumptions, trusting the space that opens up and finding the best way for you.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In many countries, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counsellor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counsellors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counsellor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counsellors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
