I am CPsychol, psycho-dynamic and experiential psychotherapist (Certified in AEDP, AB-ISTDP, EMDR; also traning in DBR, IFS).
Hello and welcome. I’m here to help you find the inner strengths you need to unblock what’s troubling you and move on with your life. My clients tell me I’m warm, kind and insightful – which is good, because my main aim is to offer a safe, welcoming place where you feel willing and able to consider making changes. Most of us aren’t used to reaching out for professional support. We’re brought up to think asking for help can be a sign of weakness. But whatever you’re facing, working together with a professional therapist can let you see a way forward.

In my experience every client comes to therapy with a unique set of life circumstances. Sometimes these contribute to personal and emotional problems which can feel overwhelming or even insurmountable. Often, it is at this point that a person reaches out for professional help. They may identify that low mood, negative thinking, stress or relationship problems are impediments to living a good life and they will want help to restore healthy self-esteem, confidence, balance and self-worth. Often clients are looking for a supportive, non-judgmental, compassionate and caring professional to guide them on their journey to wellbeing.

Anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties are all symptoms of our inner struggles and efforts to deal with discord, pain and distress.  We suffer. We feel overwhelmed, lost, hurt and confused.   Work, friend and family relationships are affected and our usual sources of support often become strained or break down.  We may turn to alcohol, drugs or self harm for comfort.  These are all very human reactions to painful life circumstances. Your distressing symptoms are life’s way getting your attention and guiding you towards a healthier and more fulfilling life experience.

I deeply believe that in all of us there is the capacity to grow, to heal and to become more fully who we want to be. Our sessions would provide a safe space to help you feel less alone in exploring whatever you are currently facing, whether life-altering challenges, day-to-day difficulties, or just feeling that your life isn’t quite how you’d like it to be. In our work together, we would develop a shared, holistic understanding of your situation, identifying patterns and making connections between past experiences and the present, and going on to think about the best way forward.

You're a sensitive, thoughtful person. In so many ways you know you should feel lucky to have achieved what you have. But lately you've been feeling worried, overwhelmed and sometimes a bit hopeless. And your sensitivity - which could be your superpower - instead seems to only make you feel worse. You feel like you should be able to sort yourself out and carry on - but deep inside a small inner voice is calling out that it needs to be honoured and heard. You long to find somewhere that you can feel truly listened to and understood. Where it's okay that you're a complex person, full of contradictions and questions.

Hello! I'm Shona, a Mindfulness-based Experiential Therapist. I have successfully worked with many people experiencing things we can all face in life: relationship/work struggles, stress, burn-out, rejection, heart-break, fear, anxiety, depression, overwhelm, trauma, loss and abuse. The part I am so privileged to play is to accompany and guide my clients on a journey of discovery and healing. I enjoy complexity and recognise that whilst one part of you may desperately want things to change and be trying to change things, other parts of you can remain stuck. At the beginning it may not be clear how or why this is.

Hello and welcome, I see you made the first, very important step. You came to realisation you have a problem and that you need professional support. I can help you to specify, name, give a meaning and assist you in your way to recovery of your mental balance while keeping you on the course you chose.I strongly believe that Clients know themselves the best, therefore are the experts of the “knowledge of themselves”; however sometimes they need support to uncover or unblock the inner resources. I encourage taking responsibility for yourself, “can do” attitude to stimulate your mental healing and growth process.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
