Did you know 1 out 5 children in the UK experiences mental health challenges that affects their ways of relating with loved ones at some point during their childhood? Getting appropriate support at an early stage is important for children who have experienced physical or emotional trauma. Children struggling with their emotions often act out or become withdrawn. These responses are put down as behaviour issues while in fact they are children's way of communicating to adults that they need support. Music Therapy is the perfect tool for children who are not ready to 'talk it through' to express themselves in ways that motivates them.

Life can be hard and doesn't always go the way we would like. I offer a range of session times where together we can explore what you are experiencing and work towards where you want to be. I have worked with depression and anxiety among other issues in out-patient NHS settings as well as NHS in-patient units for trauma and self harm. I also work with a range of presenting issues in private practice where I offer concession rates to accommodate your situation. I am currently conducting doctoral research into the treatment of depression and understand the importance of having a safe empathetic space and good therapeutic relationship.

I am an integrative therapist, meaning I draw on multiple approaches and theories in my practice, but my way of working has been particularly shaped by relational psychotherapy and attachment theory. This means I believe that the relationships we experience in our early lives affect our later ways of relating to both ourselves and others. I believe that therapy is a fundamentally relational endeavour - not that people are broken and therefore need to be “fixed” - but rather that through working together we can come to new ways of relating, understanding and being.

Life can often be complex and exploring issues in conversation with another person can shed be illuminating, perhaps understanding how past experiences are influencing current issues. This can and does bring about change in our relationship with ourselves and others. In our sessions together, you can talk about whatever is on your mind from the present or the past, and bring feelings and thoughts for us to consider. Your trust and sense of safety is important so I will encourage you to move at your own pace.

Are you getting the message from others that you “should be over your bereavement by now”? Do you feel guilty at not having been or done “enough” for your deceased loved one? Do you have more difficult/complicated feelings towards your deceased loved one that wouldn’t be acceptable to share with your family and friends? If you can relate to any of these questions I would be happy to hear from you. Having completed a Bereavement Support Course with Cruse Bereavement Support I have worked with many bereaved people offering an understanding, non-judgemental approach.

Waitlist for new clients
Whether due to recent events or past ones, many people struggle with grief, loss, food and body, and traumatic experiences, leaving them feeling stuck, overwhelmed and needing support. My professional expertise is in working with clients struggling with trauma and PTSD; struggling with eating disorders, body image and identity; child and adult bereavement; clients undergoing cancer treatment; end of life care; and carers. This breadth of experience has informed my understanding of the universality of inner conflict and distress, and how the tools of self-exploration and insight are essential to effect change in the here-and-now.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
