I am an Integrative Psychotherapist and have also trained in Internal Family Systems therapy.
You may be feeling in crisis, confused, or stuck. Whatever is prompting you to consider therapy, it is an opportunity to really get to know yourself and rediscover inner resources which you may have lost contact with. We all unconsciously develop ways to avoid aspects of ourselves which confound or trouble us, but eventually they can become impossible to ignore. I can offer skilled and compassionate guidance as you turn towards them. This naturally fosters new understanding and a different relationship with yourself. Whatever your hope or goal, I have learned that what is in the way, is the way, and you don’t have to travel alone.

I have worked for over 20 years with a diverse range of issues, including anxiety, trauma, refugee issues, sexuality, sexual health, family and relationships, substance use and mental health.
Sometimes the world seems complicated and life feels difficult. Maybe problematic relationships have stopped you trusting yourself and moving forward, or past traumatic experiences keep you stuck with anxiety and fear. You might find yourself repeating behaviours and patterns that you really don't want to, but the path forward looks foggy and is hard to navigate. I seek to support people to find a way to through problems, to grow and make changes in theirs lives and relationships, and feel more resilient in tough times, as well as being more able to appreciate and enjoy achievements.

I support clients struggling with family trauma, social anxiety and health issues. You may have found that over time the coping strategies you previously relied on have stopped working and patterns of behaviour from the past are holding you back. You may feel isolated and worn down by these old habits, no longer able to cope in the way you used to as it becomes harder to put a brave face on what is an increasingly challenging situation. Working together, with empathy and without judgement, in a safe, supportive and confidential environment, we can explore your experience and help you to find a better way forward that brings you joy.

Sometimes, things can get a bit too much and we find ourselves needing help, wanting to reach out to family and friends, but they are often caught up in their own issues and cannot fully hold space for ours.
No matter what you're going through, I will hold you in a safe and non-judgemental space where you can explore your issues freely. I will walk alongside you as you get things off your chest, helping you find clarity and balance as you move through things. Being held in this therapeutic environment will give you the space to grow and transform, allowing you to be accepted for who you truly are. Transmutation is at the heart of all my therapeutic work ... in alchemical terms, it is the process of transforming lead into gold, helping you to change from a state of distress and inner conflict to a state of wholeness and authenticity.

I believe the relationship between the client and counsellor is hugely important. I am a warm and approachable person, focused on putting you at ease. At times in life, it can feel that people don't understand us, like we are being judged for the way we feel. It can be helpful to communicate these thoughts and emotions to gain a clarity and understanding to help you find a more fulfilling way of living. From personal experience, I understand that counselling can help make profound changes in their lives and relationships. These changes happen through a greater understanding and acceptance of ourselves.

I aim to offer a professional yet down to earth relationship in which you can explore your personal difficulties whatever they may be. Sessions are offered weekly or fortnightly, usually in an open ended way until you're feeling more like yourself again. Some people come for a few sessions, some for a few months and others decide to come longer term. Many people are now starting to use therapy over time and re-access support at times when it is needed most with someone who they trust to know them and their life well. I take a firm stance on challenging stigma surrounding mental health.

Hello and thanks for stopping! I love what I do. 'Extremely easy to talk to'...'turned things around for me'...'helped save my life' being a few client comments. I'm 10 years qualified. During that time I've worked with serving police officers and civilian staff at Merseyside Police, those supported by Victim Support Homicide Service, VI Form students, and Occupational Health clients I know that being a counsellor is something that was always meant for me because I have an affinity with people and being able to be 'with' them. This and my life experience gives me the perfect grounding to be the best that I can be for my clients.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
