Feeling safety in a complex world is no mean feet. Childhood, historic, or current experiences, interacting/reacting with the complexities brought about by the pandemic, can exhaust any capacity for resilience. maybe you're a parent/carer of children transitioning from the intensity of lockdown to the uncertainty of the easing of restrictions? Is this further complicated by returning to education settings for children with Autism, ADHD, FASD, SPD, trauma and attachment? Maybe you are a foster care or adoptive parent wondering how to rebalance the attachment bond after the intensity of lockdown, recalibrating interfamilial dynamics?

I am a down to earth and approachable counsellor for children, young people and adults. I have 27 years experience working with young people who have been abused as well as people with neurodivergence. At times, feelings and behaviours can become difficult due to past trauma, increasing anxiety or for unknown reasons. We can also feel this physically and it blocks lifes natural progression. Past trauma does not need to be extreme and we often underestimate the impact an event has on us. I can help you make sense of your emotions and behaviours and manage your responses to triggers, allowing progression towrards your desired goals.

I believe the most important thing in counselling is to develop a relationship of trust and confidence between therapist and client. I provide clients with a safe, confidential and warm space for them to reflect on the challenges they bring. Coming to counselling can be a daunting step; as a result it is that much more important to come into an accepting, empathic, non-judgemental environment. I take the view that there is no single approach that can be helpful to you in all situations. This gives more choice of how you want to look at your issues and creates flexibility to tailor therapy to your individual needs and aspirations.

We live in a culture that promotes the idea of strong, powerful individuals who live picture perfect lives. There is little room for showing our vulnerability, or our need for connection. There is a cultural expectation that when things are difficult for us we should just 'get over it' and not make a fuss, this might manifest in you with thoughts of "what's wrong with me", "why is this so hard" and "I should be able to manage by myself" and so on! You may be feeling fragmented, disconnected, numb, overwhelmed, fearful, unable to cope, you might feel like giving up.

Psychotherapy is a rare invitation to truth - a place to explore your self and your story, make sense of why you feel the way you do and ask how you might meet life's challenges in a more authentic, meaningful and fulfilling way. My approach is integrative, creative and embodied. It considers who you are and what happened to you, as well as what your heart desires. As a relational therapist, I also put your experience with me in therapy at the heart of our work together.

Sometimes difficulties can have a major impact on our well-being, relationships or work. Maybe friends and family can offer some support but we may also choose to see a qualified and experienced practitioner, who can provide a safe space in which to work with whatever is going on for us. I have a wide range of experience, including working in the NHS, at university as Associate Lecturer (14 years) and in a GP practice as a Lead Therapist and Supervisor, delivering Relational Integrative Therapy. I draw on Psychodynamic and Person-Centred approaches, relational CBT and CFT (Compassion-Focussed Therapy).

I'm passionate about supporting families, couples, adults & teens to understand their unhealthy relationships (maybe family dynamics) or move past difficult life events to give you/your family the confidence to be healthier & happier in all connections with others. Are other relationships being affected; family, romantic, friendships, work, school? Do you struggle with (sometimes chronic) health issues? I struggled with abusive/narcissistic relationships for years & needed support to understand how this affected me & what I needed to change to have healthy relationships.

I am a creative, enthusiastic, yet boundaried psychotherapeutic counsellor based in Bristol, and specialise in a form of talking therapy called transactional analysis. I run Cactus Counselling. Why "Cactus"?, Well, anxiety, depression, low self esteem, and family issues tend to make us feel prickly on the outside but soft and vulnerable on the inside, and even if that means we're well adapted to our current situation, many people recognise that a change is needed to live in somewhere more clement than the deserts of life. I offer psychotherapeutic counselling to help people explore beyond their thorns.

My work is informed by attachment, family systems, psychodynamic and polyvagal theory.
When we are bereaved it can feel as if our whole world has shattered and there is no one who understands. Whether or not our loss was expected, when someone dies it can seem as if we have been forced to walk through a door that we didn't even know was there. There is no way back. The outside world moves on fast, not realising what it's like to be left behind in a blizzard of complex feelings. People often try to cheer us up in a way that just makes us feel worse. If we have been bereaved it can be hard to talk to a parent who has their own worries, or there may simply be no words. There is no right or wrong way to grieve.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
