Are you feeling overwhelmed, lost, sad, fearful, anxious, angry? You might have a clear idea of what you want to talk about, or not know where to start. Together, in a confidential setting, we'll explore and make sense of things you might not want or feel able to share elsewhere. Counselling isn't about me telling you what to do. You won't be given answers - although I'll listen carefully to you so I can offer insights and perspectives. I won't judge you, your thoughts, or how you live your life. You may reflect on ideas or try things between sessions or choose to leave the things you talk about there, to pick up again each week.

April 2024 I am now taking on new clients All of us have times in our lives when we feel the need for some extra support. Perhaps we are lacking confidence and self-esteem, going through relationship difficulties, feeling depressed, anxious, experiencing stressful life changes such as bereavement, divorce, or redundancy. Perhaps now is the right time to address long-standing issues – or maybe we find ourselves at a crossroads and feel unsure of ourselves and of which way to turn.

In life, we all experience loss and major changes; we face difficult choices and overwhelming feelings. As a counsellor I know support and self-understanding are key in moving forward positively, but as a human I know this is easier said than done. Finding the right therapist and the consequent process is deeply personal and should be rooted in trust, empathy and an accepting environment. With experience in trauma, addiction and mental health, my focus is you, and the respect and understanding of your unique story and context. Whatever is going on, together we can explore your past, make sense of the present and plan for the future.

Most of us are taught from an early age that we should hide parts of ourselves to get by. As the person we are pulls away from the person we’re told we should be, we’re left with lingering distress and a struggle to feel truly connected and at home within ourselves. I believe the more we understand, accept and nurture ourselves, the more equipped to find the connection, community and purpose we’re longing for. Perhaps you feel that sense of struggle, or are feeling unmoored from the person you really are. Perhaps you're looking for support as you grow and find your way.

I work with people who are you feeling anxious or depressed or uncertain how to live in a way that feels satisfying. With people who have suffered bereavement, the end of a relationship or who are struggling with relationships that aren't working and leave them feeling unhappy. With people who are unhappy at work and feel stuck in a job that isn't what they'd hoped it would be, a job that's too challenging or not challenging enough. With people who are struggling with ways of being sexual, who find it hard to have the kind of sexual relationships they want, to know how to begin, negotiate or end intimate sexual relationships.

I believe the most important thing in counselling is to develop a relationship of trust and confidence between therapist and client. I provide clients with a safe, confidential and warm space for them to reflect on the challenges they bring. Coming to counselling can be a daunting step; as a result it is that much more important to come into an accepting, empathic, non-judgemental environment. I take the view that there is no single approach that can be helpful to you in all situations. This gives more choice of how you want to look at your issues and creates flexibility to tailor therapy to your individual needs and aspirations.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
