It can be really unsettling to deal with negative emotions by ourselves and to not know what we can do to help ourselves to feel better. I have been guiding clients for 16 years to achieve a resilient emotional stability and a more balanced sense of self-worth.

I believe that it's through a secure therapeutic relationship that an individual can gain self awareness, insight and a deeper understanding of their feelings and concerns to grow, to re engage in life and move forward to reach their full potential.

The idea of starting therapy may be overwhelming. You may be feeling anxious, depressed or lost, and not knowing how you got to where you are now. I aim to listen to you share your problems, stories and experiences. I am interested in what you have to say and understand how difficult it may be for you to share your feelings with others, especially if they involve traumatic experiences. I work relationally, meaning that I am invested in supporting you to achieve your goals.

In my practice, the therapeutic relationship is a space where difficult life experiences can be worked through. I take an integrative approach, in which I encourage you to be curious about how your difficulties relate to previous experiences and your expectations for yourself and others. This often brings up feelings that can seem unwelcome and I work with you to help you understand unwanted emotions and connect to your body. My approach aims to deepen your self-awareness in the here-and-now as this helps you to understand and feel compassion for yourself, and be okay in who you are.

Choosing the right therapist can feel impossible especially when you're already feeling low, overwhelmed or disconnected. I offer a free first session so you can meet me and see if you think you'd like to work together. I’m down to earth and approachable and will create a supportive space for you and all your feelings so you can explore whatever it is that’s weighing you down. I want you to feel truly seen and heard. Often that’s all it takes to find a fresh perspective but I can also push and challenge you to help break away from whatever it is that’s been holding you back. You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

If you are looking for someone to discuss issues affecting your well-being or preventing you from leading a fulfilling and rewarding life, psychotherapy or counselling can help bring about the changes you want to make. You may decide you need only a few sessions to deal with concerns that have begun to dominate and disrupt your life, or you may want longer term psychotherapy/counselling. The aim of therapy is to create an atmosphere of safety, in which exploration, understanding and growth can flourish.

Hello I’m Selene. I have 20 years of experience as a counsellor. I am a warm and open-minded person with a good sense of humour. I offer a welcoming and confidential space where we can together create an empowering therapeutic relationship. I believe you are an expert in your own life and my role is to support and challenge you reconnecting with yourself and your strengths. Counselling is an opportunity to give yourself the time and space to imagine who you want to be. Sometimes fear and shame make us stuck and disconnected from others and not able to ask for what we want. Therapy can help you free yourself and open connection.

Experiential Therapy Counsellors

How does experiential therapy work?

Experiential therapy works by allowing an individual to use their creativity to re-imagine themselves and their lives in an effort to process their emotions. Experiential therapy may take many forms, including engaging clients through art, re-enactments, role-playing, music, or forms of physical recreation. By focusing on these activities, experiential therapists help individuals identify the emotions they associate with previous experiences and work together to cope with negative reactions, like fear, anger, or shame.

Is experiential therapy evidence-based?

Experiential therapy incorporates many therapy modalities, some of which have been more closely researched than others. Music therapy, for example, has been shown to help with sleep problems. Some studies find that art therapy can be beneficial for those with eating disorders or personality disorders, while other research suggests that such approaches have little impact.

How long does experiential therapy last?

The duration of experiential therapy will depend on the type of therapy used as well as the severity of the challenges an individual faces. Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Art therapy may comprise 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Music therapy sessions generally last between 30 and 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or on an as-needed basis. For each therapy type, clients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

Does experiential therapy help with trauma?

Trauma is one area where experiential therapy may be useful. Traumatic experiences such as combat or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating visual art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. Listening to music can be relaxing, while making music as part of a group provides plenty of opportunities to connect with other people. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, or who have been physically or emotionally abused.
