Hello, my name is Tom, and my aim is to offer you a supportive and kind space to experience change, healing and to help you explore whatever it is you are going through. Much of my work supports clients with depression, anxiety, relationships, connection, identity, self-esteem, existential thoughts and the search for meaning. You might also be going through life changes, looking to explore yourself or understand, challenge & change behaviours. I work with all adults and specialise in working with queer communities & those who are neurodivergent. These will be your sessions and I aim to help you work towards whatever goals you have.

Working from the humanistic existential tradition, I believe in the incredible human capacity to change and grow through embracing acceptance, responsibility and freedom.
Life can be hard, however, there are some times when difficulties and feelings become overwhelming and everything seems like a struggle. Having a capable ally alongside you who is impartial, warm and honest can be what’s needed to recognise and shift out of unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour. Living in this world can't always be safe but I believe we are meant to feel safe in our bodies and our sense of who we are. Rather than 'fixing' problems, focusing on being 'better' or even happier, we can develop our sense of security, wholeness and worth, increasing our ability to navigate life's challenges.

Feeling alone, seeing no future, having no meaning in life are the primary aims of existential therapy.
Do you feel lost and helpless? Not being understood by others and feeling alone? Are you struggling in your relationship as a couple or in the work environment? Coming to counselling you will find a safe space to express your feelings without being judged. It may be your first experience of feeling heard - being truly listened to and understood. Counselling can help you move towards becoming aware of life's limitations, how you can choose to live your very own life in a meaningful way, to find yourself, and to embrace the freedom of your own choices;

I work within an existential framework, drawing upon knowledge, training and experience from different therapeutic approaches and schools of thought, all to suit the person sat in front of me.
Life is not straightforward and sometimes overwhelming. Often we know what our difficulties are, sometimes we don't. I offer a friendly, supportive environment in which to talk about what matters most to you, and find ways to move forward. I am a psychotherapist working for Prohealth UK (www.prohealthuk.org) and privately. I have worked in varied settings, providing psychotherapy services for NHS patients, Staffordshire Fire & Police Service, Staffordshire County Council, East Staffs Borough Council, Salford Hospital and local charity.

I have a hybrid approach, both in-depth and practical, combining existential therapy and philosophical perspectives with more action-based approaches, including life coaching, solution-focused therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy.
My aim is to help you to live a rich and meaningful life. Through an in-depth, reflective, supportive dialogue, I help you to clarify what you value, disentangling what really matters from old or habitual beliefs; identify and address the patterns that hold you back from living in a way that fully expresses your values; and look at ways in which you can start moving towards that valued life. Do get in touch if you are going through a transition, feel you’re not quite being the person you’d like to be, are struggling with a decision, or simply feel you'd like to understand yourself better and live life more fully.

One of the benefits the existential approach is that your experiences are addressed in such a way that you develop a working partnership with them; leading to an increase in self-understanding and extending your ability to make apt choices and decisions.
Life is a journey and we all choose how to embark upon it. Choices have consequences and it is the consequences that many people have most difficulty dealing with. The need for personal fulfillment and quality of life are ever more apparent in the current global climate. As an experienced Psychotherapist and Life Coach, I have enabled people to examine their lives and ultimately make choices that they can live with. My clients and I have successfully resolved a very broad range of issues, including: *Life changes (redundancy; divorce) *Abuse *Depression *Bereavement *Loneliness *Anxiety *Poor Relationships *Terminal Illness

My approach towards therapy is both humanistic and integrative, drawing on the practice of existential therapy, cbt and psychoanalytic therapy.
Life can be very challenging at times and it can be difficult to make sense of things and find a way forwards on our own. Therapy aims towards increasing our self-knowledge and attaining clarity over our feelings, intentions and tendencies. By becoming more aware of the challenges we experience, and how we respond to these, we also become more able to identify alternative ways of looking at them and addressing them. I offer a safe space to facilitate this exploration and promote insight and personal growth. Everyone is unique and so everything that is brought into therapy is treated with care, respect and confidentiality.

I am a qualified BACP Accredited Counsellor and Family/Systemic Practitioner and I have been qualified for over twenty years. I offer a talking therapy and/or creative therapy to children, adults and young people. My approach to counselling is ‘Client-Centred’ having been trained in a number of modalities; Psychodynamic, Person-Centred, Existential, CBT and as a Family Systemic Practitioner. I believe it is firstly the relationship between counsellor and client(s) which provides the foundation to explore, understand, challenge and change patterns of behaviour which are causing relationship difficulties and personal distress.

We need therapy at certain stages in our life to help us process feelings and thoughts - it can provide a way to manage difficult emotions and talk about ourselves in a confidential space away from loved ones and friends. My background is in Person-Centred and Existential Counselling, and I’ve been helping people since 2004. Over the years, I’ve incorporated various theories and practices into my approach, allowing me to offer a personalised, humanistic therapeutic experience. I work with individuals and couples online using Teams or Zoom and have a room in Central Southampton for face to face work.

Existential Counsellors

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
