Perhaps you're feeling trapped or blocked by the past, confused knowing there must be more to life but feeling stuck in survival. Maybe you feel in the depths of despair with feelings of stress, depression and anxiety or recently grieving from a bereavement, a loss of some kind or simply can’t make sense of a general flatness and loss of meaning. You know changes need to be made and seeking a safe supportive space to work through your process to find greater balance and meaning to life, allowing you to really live your life fully.

I am senior trainee in Core Process Psychotherapy with 20 years of working in mental health. We all have times in our life when we suffer. This takes many forms such as depression, anxiety, grief, negative patterns of behaviour or lack of meaning. At times we cannot see a way out and need help. Psychotherapy creates a safe and compassionate space to explore our experience. By listening and empathising at a deep level I allow you to fully engage with your difficulties, at a pace that is right for you. This is a collaborative journey that ultimately leads to more freedom and contentment. All you need to bring is curiosity and openness.

Searching for the right counsellor can feel daunting. How do you know which one to choose, and who you will be comfortable with? It's a big decision. Let me tell you a little about me and the way I work. I am a dedicated and compassionate psychodynamic counsellor, a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). I believe that our past experiences shape who we are today and that by uncovering and understanding unconscious behaviours and choices, we can gain insight and self-awareness, and light the way for future growth.

Looking for a therapist can be an overwhelming experience; however, it is already a good step in your journey. You may be needing to be listened to or seeking support for a particular challenge. Emotional pain and mental distress need a space to be explored and processed and therapy can offer a safe environment for this.Counseling and psychotherapy can provide an opportunity to be in a safe space where you can be listened to by someone who is unbiased and non-judgmental. By sharing your story and your experiences, and building trust and openness in the relationship with your therapist, we can attempt to gain deeper understanding.

Therapy is your time to be curious about how you feel and who you are. Part of the therapeutic experience is enquiring into how things are between us, working in present time to illuminate what happens in relationship. Together we create a space where your own wisdom and understanding can emerge using compassion and kindness. With the intention of bringing a new understanding and capacity around key issues we look at your reactions to situations. Working together we seek to use the present moment to integrate and metabolise difficult experience. I find using humour in therapy can be a useful instrument for change.

I offer a safe and collaborative space to explore with you the feelings, thoughts and behaviours that you experience with your issue. Together we will develop an understanding of how these affect you, and what keeps them going. We will work to develop and practice a 'toolkit' of techniques that you can continue to use, to encourage more healthy ways of thinking and responding, to gain better control and emotional balance to reach your therapy goal. I can work with you on issues such as general anxiety, feeling 'stuck', depression, low confidence and self esteem, and social anxiety.

You might seek help for a specific problem such as obsessional behaviour, social anxiety or psycho-somatic symptoms. Or you may have more general feelings of anxiety or depression associated with dissatisfaction in work, the challenge of forming satisfying relationships or issues with money, food or sex. You may feel unfulfilled, bored or creatively inhibited. All of these difficulties affect the quality of your life. Psychotherapy and counselling provide an effective treatment for just such disorders and concerns and can contribute significantly to your mental health, sense of well-being and to managing your life more effectively.

Whatever your starting point, therapy can help you to understand yourself and feel stronger in the face of life's challenges by building the sense of self. Coping strategies which were put in place in childhood can gradually be released.

Are you supporting a preteen, teenager, or young adult who is experiencing overwhelm, anxiety, and/or depression? Does your child struggle with big feelings, stress, self-harm or suicidal thoughts? If so, then that sounds really tough for them, and you as a parent. They aren't alone in that experience, and you don’t need to try and figure it out alone either - this is where a therapist such as myself can be of help. I work extensively with ages 7-26, providing a supportive space where clients can learn to process how they are feeling, building self-esteem and self-compassion, in the process.

I have over 10 years of experience working with adults to overcome mental health problems. CBT is an ideal treatment for those who are looking to change, whether that be to make some changes in the way in which you think about things, or some changes in the way in which you do things day to day. CBT can also help clients come to an understanding of 'why', E.G. what is it about you, your experiences & vulnerabilities which perhaps help explain why you struggle. This is often validating & helpful rather than self blaming. Together we will equip you with the skills and understanding you need in order to move forward with confidence.

Creating a safe and secure environment is paramount, enabling children the freedom to explore at their own pace is so important. My primary aim is to first build upon a trusting therapeutic relationship. It is through this foundation, I believe, that will path the way to the child growing emotionally. I will seek to build their confidence, helping them to believe in who they are and knowing that they have the tools in which to help themselves.

What you get from me is an attentive and proactive ally. I am friendly and compassionate, but I won't passively observe unhelpful patterns that are barriers to change. Challenging when necessary and in solidarity with the part of you that knows things can be better, will be a key aspect of our relationship. Profound and lasting changes are possible, which is why I encourage people to address the root causes of unhappiness and not settle for learning to live with problems and symptoms that can often be resolved.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counselling

How can I find a therapist in Bristol?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
