I am an experienced Child, Young Person and
Parent
Psychotherapist based in Harrogate. There are times when we all struggle emotionally. For children and young people it can often be difficult to understand their own emotions or be able to express their thoughts. Sometimes this leads to overwhelming and confusing feelings, with behaviours that seems stuck, possibly resulting in low self-esteem and struggles with relationships. Counselling and creative therapy provides a safe and supportive space to explore emotions, feelings, develop an understanding of our thoughts whilst building communication skills and emotional resilience.

As a midwife and birth trauma therapist I have realised that sadly most women who experience trauma through the childbearing experience aren’t getting the help they need. Instead this emotional wound is left unhealed and the consequence permeate through their thoughts, emotions, decisions and relationships. What would it feel like to truly let go of negative thoughts and emotions from your previous traumatic experience, get clarity and create space for a positive new future? How You Feel Matters - because pregnancy, birth and
parenting
are more than physical event.

We each have our own particular blend of resources and limitations, specific to us and unique as a fingerprint. That's why my therapeutic counselling doesn't provide 6-step plans, workbooks or programmes. It's open, free-flowing and exploratory. It takes the time to clear a regular safe space in which to unpack the events, relationships and emotions that you bring with you to this moment. To think about your feeling and feel your thinking. To talk, to laugh, to be tired, angry, uplifted or simply just to take the time to be. With compassion, empathy and without judgment.

I appreciate that it can feel difficult in asking for help and to put trust in someone you have never met, especially with often upsetting and difficult issues. It can feel like we may have somehow failed or its a last resort in trying to resolve difficulties. I have helped many people like yourself, who also felt unsure initially on what to expect and feelings of trepidation or embarrassment in asking for help. I believe that the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client is all important to be effective in addressing the issues and helping you to make the changes that you want and to get things back on track.

At one point or another, most of us experience issues that require deeper attention and support. Whether that's feeling generally low and lacking enthusiasm for life, battling with depression, anxiety or bereavement, counselling can support you to get back on track. As well as these issues, I have a particular interest in disordered eating and family relationship struggles. Don't wait until you're on the brink of collapse before reaching out. Counselling can help you gain perspective, put your thoughts and feelings in order and carve a path back to happiness.

Parenting Counsellors
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioural problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilised, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
