You’ve spent years putting others first, being the peacemaker and people-pleaser, but inside you’re emotionally exhausted and left wondering why you feel so alone. Maybe you’re feeling invisible or like you're constantly walking on eggshells; it doesn’t have to stay this way. I work with those who feel like they put in so much more than anyone else, whether at home, with friends or at work; the dependable ones who’ve become so good at tending to others that they’ve lost touch with who they are. My clients often live their life wearing a brave face but underneath they are wondering why their life doesn’t look how they imagined.

What if what you're fighting is actually trying to protect you? Anxiety, depression and relationship problems all have a story. Sometimes the problem isn't who you are, but what you've had to do to cope. You may already understand where your difficulties come from, yet still find yourself feeling or reacting in the same old ways. Knowing why isn't always enough to change it. And that can leave you wondering: what now? Perhaps you need to go deeper - to look beneath the surface, ask questions you may never have thought to ask and see what you may never have thought to look for. That's where I can help. Things can change.

Hi, I'm Jo and I specialise in working with individuals who are facing struggles in their life due to feelings of low self-worth, anxiety, and shame. Perhaps the emotional pain has led you to engage in behaviours that help you to escape or distract from difficult thoughts or feelings. Sometimes this can show up as out of control behaviours such as gambling, use of pornography, sex, or alcohol/drugs. Sometimes it can lead to overworking and burnout. Would you like to find some compassion and acceptance for all those parts of you? Are there aspects of your behaviours you’d like to change?

Hi, I'm Emily. I have over 15 years of experience supporting people with a wide range of difficulties including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, low self esteem, emotional overwhelm, physical health and trauma. Sometimes emotional problems don't fit neatly into these categories and it can be hard describing exactly what you want to change. I spend time guiding people through an assessment of what they struggle with to develop a shared understanding of their goals and what therapy I could offer.

You feel like you’re always “too much” or “not enough.” You overthink everything, and every time there's a conflict you think people are going to leave you, therefore you struggle to set boundaries and tend to people-please. You want to be able to maintain relationships without the fear of being rejected or abandoned, without idealising others or without losing yourself in the same old patterns. Deep down, you just want to be accepted for who you are, you want to feel chosen and that you are a priority on someone else's life, and to feel emotionally safe.

I believe that when people connect, change can happen. I work face to face in centre of York or online across the UK. If your experiences are weighing on you and you feel working with someone neutral may help I could be a good fit for you. I work in a trauma informed way; treating your past experiences with compassion and care, and together we can work towards how you would like your life to be now; safe and connected. Maybe life just isn't how you would like it to be and you're trying to make sense of past experiences on your own. I may be able to help. I am a tutor at Leeds University and I hold two places for trainee therapists.

I'm an integrative relational psychotherapist and I use my experience of talking and relating to you in sessions to understand your way of being in the world, how you make sense of it and how you relate to others. Your journey is unique. Every time I've been listened to and understood I've come away feeling cared for and valued with a new sense of worth. I've learned that change is inevitable and that how I care for myself in the present affects my future.

Do you keep telling yourself "tomorrow will be different", then find yourself retuning to the same patterns? Perhaps you feel overwhelmed, anxious or stuck. You may turn to food, alcohol or substance use, shopping, or gambling to cope with difficult feelings. These ways of coping often develop for a reason, and can be hard to let go. Do you struggle with people pleasing, shame or low-self worth, without fully understanding why? Together we can explore these patterns, how they developed and helped you cope, and also what keeps them going. I offer a non-judgemental, compassionate space tailored to you, and what you are experiencing.

Let’s face it, shit happens. Life can change in the blink of an eye, or our choices lead us down a merry path of disappointment. Are you at a standstill, or chasing round in circles? Is it difficult to see a way through on your own? It can help to share and offload some of those burdens with someone who has your back. Therapy is an experiential process and it really helps to have someone whose job is to listen alongside.

I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist who offers a safe, non-judgemental and professional space where you can be supported in exploring your past, present and/or future within a therapeutic relationship that you will feel really seen and heard in. I have a depth of understanding to help support you, gained from extensive training and through both personal and professional experience.

Codependency Counsellors
What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.

What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.

How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.

What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
