I have also worked with people affected by trauma, PTSD and bereavement .
Most people, at some point in their lives, experience emotional difficulties. This may be due to traumatic events, overload of stress, or issues stemming back to childhood. Talking through such difficulties can help to validate and make sense of your feelings, work out how to heal, and move on with positivity and meaning in your life.

With much understandable anxiety, overwhelm, depression, loss and sadness at this time, I offer a caring, safe, confidential, supportive and non-judgemental space to explore whatever brings you to therapy at this time. Alongside you, I may work towards enabling a surer sense of yourself; safely working with relationship issues (in the past or present); to understand life-changes (e.g. divorce/separation/retirement/identity issues/ bereavement and loss ); and in working traumatic moments or life-events. I offer short and longer term work. Each session can potentially discover something new as a spur to growth and healing.

I began providing therapeutic counselling to bring my years of experience in Palliative Care working with bereavement , grief , carer fatigue and difficult transitions to meet a wide set of needs.
We each have our own particular blend of resources and limitations, specific to us and unique as a fingerprint. That's why my therapeutic counselling doesn't provide 6-step plans, workbooks or programmes. It's open, free-flowing and exploratory. It takes the time to clear a regular safe space in which to unpack the events, relationships and emotions that you bring with you to this moment. To think about your feeling and feel your thinking. To talk, to laugh, to be tired, angry, uplifted or simply just to take the time to be. With compassion, empathy and without judgment.

Do you feel ripped apart and shaken to your core? You don't want to be a burden to friends and can't talk to family, it is all so overwhelming. The deepest pit of despair and hurt, mixed emotions, anguish, anger, confusion, barely coping with intense non-stop life changes. Loss of family, partner or treasured friends, sudden or chronic terminal illness, loss of the person you used to be, ageing, guilty lifestyle, fear of a new job and moving, or the prickling heartache from loss of your pet. You don’t even have the strength to take the next step, to pull yourself through while trying to reach your old self. You need a safe space.

We may find it helpful to talk problems through with someone close to us, but sometimes friends and family can not help and we need to speak to a professional therapist. I will spend time talking with you to understand your difficulties and to help you identify the roots of your problem and identify what you want to change in your life. In doing so we can find a way to work together to help you to reach your goals. I have worked with issues surrounding, anxiety, depression, trauma (including PTSD), low self esteem, stress, emotional management difficulties, phobias, OCD, relationship difficulties, and grief .

Life can be hard at times. We can experience loss , changes in our health, family circumstances or work life. Maybe our relationships are not fulfilling our needs and we do not know how to change things. At times, we don’t feel good about ourselves, we lose confidence in our ability to cope with life or maybe we feel impacted by past experiences or held back through feelings of anger, shame or guilt. Sometimes we don’t know what’s wrong, but we just know something isn’t right. I can help you explore what is going on for you by giving you a supportive space to talk and be heard.

Issues may include but are not limited to anxiety, depression, grief , relationship difficulties, self harm and suicidal ideation.
Offering person-centred online counselling to adults (18+) seeking assistance to find a sense of calm and balance when faced with adversity and the difficulties life can present. In order to understand the impact of an issue and work through it with care and respect, it is often helpful to appreciate the person and their experience, which is why together we will aim to adopt a compassionate, empathetic and non-judgemental approach to our sessions. As a person-centred counsellor, I draw from positive psychology, mental fitness and compassion focused therapy techniques to invite empowerment and client autonomy.

At one point or another, most of us experience issues that require deeper attention and support. Whether that's feeling generally low and lacking enthusiasm for life, battling with depression, anxiety or bereavement , counselling can support you to get back on track. As well as these issues, I have a particular interest in disordered eating and family relationship struggles. Don't wait until you're on the brink of collapse before reaching out. Counselling can help you gain perspective, put your thoughts and feelings in order and carve a path back to happiness.

I offer friendly and down to earth counselling for young people (11yrs+) and adults, as well as supervison for counsellors and trainees. I specialise in working with anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, flashbacks, abuse, suicidal thoughts, and sexual violence. However, this does not mean you have had to experience any of these to have counselling. It may be that you feel a bit down, or you've had a loss , a change in circumstance, or a difficult relationship, or want to reflect on your life. There are so many reasons to get counselling and you don’t have to wait until it all feels a bit ‘too much’.

I have particular experience of working with trauma, anxiety and panic attacks, bereavement , sexual abuse, suicidal feelings and existential crises.
Are you feeling anxious, lost or depressed?  Are you struggling to make sense of your life?  Are you finding interactions with other people difficult or confusing?  Have you recently lost someone or something important to you?  Do you find everyday life exhausting or wonder when you will feel like 'yourself' again? Sometimes we all need a helping hand to navigate the things that life throws at us, and sometimes our bodies and minds react in ways that we struggle to understand - I aim to offer you the space to explore these issues with someone who will not judge anything you talk about. I see clients at the weekend and Mondays only.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
