You may find talking things through to explore and unravel difficult thoughts or feelings most helpful, or looking at practical strategies such as ways of managing stress or
anxiety
.
Life can feel tough and challenging at times. This may be following a specific life event, a change of circumstance, or for reasons completely unexpected or unknown. When we are struggling with something difficult we can often feel unhappy, confused, anxious or overwhelmed, with a sense of feeling stuck and unsure of where to start or what to do. Whatever your reason for accessing therapy, I believe that we all have the capacity for change and positive personal growth and that counselling can support you to bring about the change you want by helping you to find ways of placing yourself back in control.

I believe that as a society we aren’t always very good at talking about death and dying and that confronting, rather than avoiding, these issues is an important part of managing this sort of
anxiety
better.
I have a particular interest in working with individuals who are experiencing intrusive thoughts and difficult feelings around death (their own or others). This experience is commonly known as death
anxiety
or thanatophobia. The foundation also specialises in working with people experiencing related difficulties such as being preoccupied by issues of transcience, impermanence, change, ageing and loss. They may also be afflicted by a sense of purposelessness or meaninglessness. People experiencing such difficulties to a significant degree might be said to be experiencing existential or philosophical OCD.

I work with children and teenagers aged 11 and over who are experiencing
anxiety
. Managing
anxiety
requires motivation, effort and skills and we work on this in therapy. I’ll help your child recognise, understand and navigate the process of
anxiety
so they can handle however it shows up for them. I’ll help them practice and master body and brain-based skills that develop bravery and resilience so they can make the shift from perceiving experiences as threatening to seeing them as a challenge they’re willing to engage with.

I work with individuals who are struggling with all kinds of issues, such as depression,
anxiety
and stress, questions of identity, personality problems, relationship issues, bereavement, addictions, abuse, anger management and many other difficulties. Sometimes problems can be difficult to articulate, like feeling lost, confused, or like something just isn’t right. Often we can face problems that feel so ingrained that we might feel there can’t be a solution. We might feel ‘it’s just who I am’.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
