I'm an experienced and engaged therapist working with people whose current strategies of relating and coping are no longer working. As children and throughout life, we learn to behave and feel in certain ways, whilst these patterns are necessary to survive initially, they may get stuck in repeating similar relationships and situations. Therapy supports awareness, adaptation and letting go of what is no longer helpful. The key focus of my practice is to cultivate strengths and new skills.

My person-centred modality carries the core belief that we are all born innately good. Things happen to us along our journey in life. Learnt behaviour and experiences shape our thoughts and feelings in our development. We can repeat our reactions to circumstances when they occur in adulthood. We can become unconscious of our behaviours because of the busy lives we lead. It's as if our experiences stick to us like "papier mache' " in the developmental years, forming a different self. This can be an uncomfortable and unwelcome reality that we want to change in adulthood or when it becomes painful, but we often do not know how to.

Often people wonder how counselling or talking to someone can help. When you see a Counsellor/Therapist, you will have a consistency and continuity of a professional relationship, which provides you a space where you are being properly listened to. This can then allow you to think, and get a clear idea of what is going on for you. Together with your Counsellor/Therapist you can begin to explore and unpack your ideas, views, opinions, etc. This could lead you to more clarity and you may become more mindful of yourself.

No matter what brings you to therapy, it is important. You might be finding that distressing thoughts or feelings are getting in the way. Or perhaps you experience numerous unpleasant physical symptoms. Emotional response is a normal response, but understandably, it can be unpleasant, and might feel uncertain what to do when it happens. Sometimes we all need a bit support and guidance; we don't have to deal with everything on our own, especially when it gets tough. I offer evidence-based therapies within a context of kind, supportive therapeutic relationship. I currently work for mental health organizations and in private practice.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
