Psychodynamic psychotherapeutic counselling has a distinct focus on events which have troubled us in the past, although we might not have awareness of them, and continue to trouble us in the present often through repeated patterns. There might not be any defined areas of concern for clients, and issues can be deep-seated; however, the therapeutic relationship aims to bring these aspects into consciousness in a manageable way so that they may be worked through safely. While psychodynamic psychotherapeutic counselling is often open-ended and can span several years, short courses of six months or less have also shown to be effective.

I have experience in supporting people of all ages, who have brought a wide range of issues, including: bereavement, relationship difficulties,
anxiety
, depression, low self-esteem, addictions, self-harm, redundancy, illness and caring responsibilities.
Working from a shepherds hut, in a peaceful, rural location, I offer both short term and long term counselling. People come to counselling for many reasons, allowing yourself some time and space to talk can help you understand the causes of your unhappiness, distress,
anxiety
or feelings of disconnection. Being able to link feelings to your patterns of behaviour or ways of relating with others, can help you make sense of certain aspects of your life. Counselling can empower you by helping you make sense of what is happening, deal with painful thoughts, and enable you to make the changes you need to move forward.

CBT works with thoughts and behaviours as implied by its name and is very effective in treating
anxiety
,
panic
and many more in a relatively short term.
No matter what brings you to therapy, it is important. You might be finding that distressing thoughts or feelings are getting in the way. Or perhaps you experience numerous unpleasant physical symptoms. Emotional response is a normal response, but understandably, it can be unpleasant, and might feel uncertain what to do when it happens. Sometimes we all need a bit support and guidance; we don't have to deal with everything on our own, especially when it gets tough. I offer evidence-based therapies within a context of kind, supportive therapeutic relationship. I currently work for mental health organizations and in private practice.

My approach is non-clinical as I want to provide a space where you can be yourself, feel relaxed, and explore you're issues with me in ways you find the most helpful. My approach is very much 'one size does NOT fit all' so you will lead our sessions in ways you find beneficial and I will offer you a variety of techniques and tools which we can work with together towards your goal(s).

I can help with difficulties like
anxiety
&
panic
, PTSD, depression, postpartum psychosis, OCD, phobias and tokophobia - fear of pregnancy/birth - and trauma (earlier life or birth trauma) & pregnancy loss.
As a CBT therapist and midwife I really understand the barriers you might feel asking for help during the perinatal period (pregnancy, birth or postnatally). Many people struggle to talk about their
anxiety
, depression or doubts and worries about being a parent. You might feel judged or that you have failed in some way and there can be a real sense of pressure to feel positive throughout, making it sometimes feel really hard to admit you are struggling, so I understand just how significant asking for help is. Reaching out is positive and is the first step towards recovery - of your sense of self, your self worth and your wellbeing.

I've been counselling since 1989, and have extensive experience of working with sexual abuse and trauma, parenting and attachment difficulties, identity and relationship issues, depression and
anxiety
, bereavement and loss. I don’t claim to be an ‘expert’ in any of these areas because everyone's response is different and what matters is you and your own unique experience of these difficulties. I am committed to collaborating with you to find the resilient, hopeful part of yourself that becomes expert in managing your challenges and is motivated by the smallest signs of progress towards your preferred future.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
