If you're anxious or depressed, or feeling stressed because of particular issues in your life then its hard to choose a counsellor that might help you. I never knew whether to pick a therapist that looked as unhinged as I felt, or go for one that seemed to have life sorted! We often feel we have to pretend to seem 'normal' or put a mask on to face to world, but therapy can be the place where you can be yourself (or work out who that could be). I try to offer you space where you are safe to explore what is affecting you, and help you reach a way forward.

If you are looking for counselling services that specialise in neurodiversity, additional needs and siblings support, reach out today. Young people deserve to be heard, understood and supported on their journey to wellbeing. Parenting is challenging in the best of circumstances—even neurotypical children have immature self-regulation. But parenting a neurodivergent child is rewarding but also can be a different category of challenges. Having lived experience as a parent, a young person's unhappiness permeates to the whole family. Counselling not only supports your young person but also the wellbeing of the whole family too.

Hello, I’m Rebecca. I will be by your side as you explore whatever you wish to share, accepting all parts of you and bringing all parts of myself. As a person-centred therapist I offer a space that is non-judgemental, open and supportive. I offer you space that is just for you, to have the time to be heard and express yourself. I'm passionate about social justice and embed this in my practice, curious about how your identities and life experiences are felt and perceived. It feels like a really hard time to be queer and/or trans at the moment, I'm here to hold you and have understanding and experience. You are welcome and accepted.

We are all affected by hardship at some point in our lives. We may experience depression, anxiety, and a host of other challenges. We can feel overwhelmed and defeated, with every day feeling like a never-ending struggle. It can feel like we're focused solely on survival, leaving us with little or no energy for anything else, such as the things that bring us joy, meaning and purpose.

Hi! I’m Emma and I’m a person-centred therapist. I have found my niche is working with trauma and relationships, often working with individuals who are neurodiverse and LGBTQIA+ due to my own ADHD diagnosis and non-binary identity. However, I have experience working with a wide range of clients and topics. I offer a space where you can just be yourself in all your "weirdness" with it being celebrated, not tolerated. You are not a problem to be fixed, my aim as your therapist is to provide the right conditions to allow you to explore whatever you want to bring to therapy to support your growth.

Are you feeling trapped in patterns of behaviour that made sense in the past but hold you back now? Perhaps you're constantly reliving traumatic experiences in your mind or body, or feeling shame, self-criticism, anger or anxiety that you can't seem to change. Together we'll notice the feelings, beliefs, sensations and memories that show up for you in each moment, and find ways you can respond to these feelings that leave you feeling calm, self-compassionate and more resolved. If talking hasn't changed the difficulties you're experiencing, or your body feels stuck in past experiences, this way of working might be a good fit for you.

Don’t feel like yourself at the moment? Feeling lost or hopeless? Maybe you’ve been existing in survival mode for so long you don’t really know who you are anymore. Need help working out how to get back to feeling yourself again? Sometimes therapy can look at the surface level problems, the anxiety, overthinking, sadness or fears. But miss the root of the problem because they're not working with all of you. I’ve found if you work with the whole person instead of one part, there is more chance of creating meaningful change that lasts long after the therapy ends.

Transgender Counsellors

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognise a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognise a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
