Therapy is a place for you to explore your thoughts and feelings with someone who is trained to listen without judgement. It can be short term for a few sessions or long term and open ended, and is usually for one hour on the same day each week.

My primary training is in a holistic and transpersonal model of therapy, which means I work with the whole person - mind, body, feelings and hold the perspective that the problems we face also hold potential for something new to emerge. I use an integrative and relational approach and believe therapy should adapt to meet each client’s needs. This means our sessions might sometimes involve deep discussions on concepts and theories, while at other times, we may focus more on emotions, or imagery, or something which feels more ‘coach-like’ in style.

People who are keen to re-orientate their lives in the direction of their values - towards what gives them a sense of meaning and purpose. Having a clearer idea of what really matters helps people motivate themselves - even to the extent of accepting the difficulties it may entail - to either change or persist - in behaviours that will move them in their valued directions. Typically, this approach can be powerfully effective in dealing with the pervasive problems of stress, anxiety and depression and other chronic issues where rigid patterns of avoidant behaviour have developed.

Hello. I’m Sam. My training is grounded in the psychodynamic approach, which means I believe therapy is not just about addressing current issues but also about understanding how past experiences may be influencing thoughts, feelings, and behaviours today. By exploring connections between the past and present, we can gain deeper insight and develop more effective ways to approach life’s challenges. I believe in the power of therapy and the positive changes it can help to bring about so whatever you are facing right now, there is a way forward.

I am a BACP Accredited Person-Centred Practitioner and Supervisor with more than 20 years experience and 20,000 hours of clinical practice. When we are thinking about accessing counselling therapy, it can be tricky to know how to proceed especially if we have had a poor prior experience or if this is a new venture. Practitioners need to be mindful that each person is an individual snd need to feel valued as such if they are to find - through therapy - what it is they would like to achieve for themselves. It can be difficult to know what we may want from this process but, often having such a want is enough to spur us on.

I am a UKCP registered psychotherapist, specialising in body psychotherapy. I support people who are struggling to find the words for the difficulties they are feeling. Sometimes the difficulty is not in the words but in the feelings, and feelings arise in the body. Together we can explore a way of moving forward which enables a felt sense of you to emerge, met by me, and the stronger for it. Body psychotherapist works well for anxiety, depression, trauma as well as many other aspects of being human in this world. Where feelings seem out of reach I hope to bring connectivity and help you to feel seen and heard.

People come to counselling for many different reasons. Usually, they've tried to deal with their issues and problems by themselves and managed to get by or cope. Sometimes, these burdens feel too much to bear and what used to work no longer does. If you are feeling stuck, powerless, and exhausted maybe counselling can help. "You can not heal what has not been revealed" as the saying goes - so being in an environment where you can express your thoughts and feelings without humiliation, shame, or guilt is the first step in ridding yourself of the burdens that are holding you back.

Hello and welcome, I’m Jessy. Are you finding yourself feeling heavy, overwhelmed or anxious? Or a little bit of all of the above? Have you become used to masking your true feelings or not feeling like you have the permission to express yourself freely? You might have wondered if therapy will work for you. Or perhaps queried whether you deserve the support. I help people understand what’s occurring on the inside. I shine lights on the ignored or disregarded parts, experiences or feelings of a person.

As a client you might be struggling in life, either in relationships, work or feeling somehow lost, lonely or lacking in motivation. You might be experiencing loss, hardship or unable to find your voice to speak up about things that matter to you. You might feel anxious, angry or frightened. You might be aware of making the same choices in relationships that become difficult or you find it difficult to maintain or leave. Perhaps you have an unhealthy dependency of some sort. Whatever it is you may feel stuck somehow in your life. You may want to find your voice, build confidence, live a life where your choice and identity matter.

Hi, I’m Ed Christmas. I am a qualified counsellor and hypnotherapist, having trained and practiced integratively since 2018. I offer both online and face-to-face therapy from my studio in Bentley, Suffolk, from the Stephenson Centre in Ipswich, and at the Natural Health Centre in Woodbridge, Suffolk. I have a particular interest in working with clients to help them recognise and address their conditioning and trauma. Often, it is the things that we learned or were told along the way that are problematic - about ourselves, others and the world - about our past, present and future - about our purpose and our identity.

You may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns that no longer feel helpful. Perhaps you’re used to coping on your own and have reached a point where things feel harder to manage. You want some clarity, steadiness, and relief from constant worry or self-criticism and a space where you can talk openly without feeling judged. You may not have clear answers yet, but you’re hoping therapy can help you understand yourself better and find a kinder, more sustainable way forward. You don’t need to have the right words, we can work things out together.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
