I am an experienced psychotherapist helping individuals, couples and families experiencing conflict, distress and complex relational issues. My approach to psychotherapy is based on the simple premise that life's problems can be broadly classed as those we can influence and do something about, and those we need to learn to adapt to and come to terms with in order to move on. I offer clients my warmth, expertise, sympathy and understanding, which, added to their own, often untapped, wealth of expertise and knowledge about their lives, can create new possibilities at times when everything seems lost.

I work with adults who are struggling, or who despite functioning well sense that something is not quite right — patterns repeating in relationships, at work, or in how they experience themselves. Often these ways of being once served a purpose. In therapy, we explore what lies beneath.

Do you look as though you're coping on the outside, while feeling exhausted and overwhelmed on the inside? Do you tend to keep going, overthink everything, put everyone else first and try harder than most people realise? From the outside, you seem capable, yet you're wondering why life feels so much harder for you than it seems to for everyone else. Perhaps food has become a way of coping with feelings that are difficult to name or understand. Perhaps you're beginning to wonder whether ADHD and/or autism might explain experiences you've struggled to make sense of for years.

Anxiety, depression and difficult childhoods lead to misery and suffering, affecting relationships, careers, self-esteem. I help people suffering with anxiety, depression and/or childhood trauma to have better relationships with themselves and others and lead fulfilling lives. We would explore together what has led you to suffer currently and to build up greater awareness of triggers and emotions. In turn this gives you choices over how to respond to situations in ways that are healthy. I offer a bespoke approach to support you during this process.

I have been working for over 23 years with people who have a wide range of issues including, relationship and work problems, low self esteem, addictions and other forms of self harm, abuse, eating disorders, bereavement as well as people who suffer from stress and anxiety or feel low, depressed and suicidal. I am also qualified to work with couples and groups about relationships. Most of my training and work as a counsellor has been about really learning to listen to people, hearing the ‘music’ behind their words and sensing their deepest feelings, hurts, joys and fears as it is then that therapeutic healing can occur.

I have 10 years experience working with children, teens and adults.
I work with ages spanning from the tender age of 3 to adulthood. I work within trauma and attachment-related challenges, seeking solace and healing. Rooted in past experiences, and how the issues manifest in strained relationships, emotional dysregulation, and a pervasive sense of disconnection. Individuals needs transcend age barriers, encompassing a safe space for expression, empathetic understanding, and tools for coping and resilience. Through therapy, individuals will aspire to reclaim a sense of security, rebuild trust in relationships, and cultivate a healthy sense of self-worth.

Some people come to therapy with a specific ‘presenting issue’ that they wish to discuss, explore and resolve. Others are not so sure what it is that troubles them - but they do know that change of some sort is vital, and they would like that change to occur sooner rather than later. Some people come to therapy with great enthusiasm. Others (particularly those who see themselves as ‘fighters’ or ‘succeeders’) might feel embarrassed at the prospect of admitting their stuckness. Whatever your current life situation, allow me to reassure you that change is not only possible, but can often occur in just a few sessions.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
