Hi, I’m Stuart – a UKCP-accredited Integrative Humanistic Psychotherapist. I offer a safe, steady, and compassionate space for you to explore what hurts, what’s held you back, and what you long for. Are you always putting others first? Does it feel like no one hears you, sees you, or perhaps has ever truly cared for you? Are you low, anxious, angry... or have that feeling something about life just isn't right? Maybe you’ve been endlessly scrolling, hoping to find someone who feels right. Someone real. You might not even be sure what you need yet, just that something has to change.

I work holistically and creatively, recognising that emotional wellbeing is rarely isolated from physical health, nervous system regulation, lifestyle, relationships, meaning and community. My approach integrates psychological understanding with complementary and collaborative therapies where appropriate, creating support that is individualised rather than ‘one-size-fits-all.’ Alongside my therapeutic work, I have a growing interest in developing innovative and collaborative models of wellbeing that bridge talking therapy with integrative health approaches. Modern mental health support must move beyond symptom management.

Trauma and related issues are at the heart of the work we do with most clients. This might be related to clients’ experiences of abuse, loss or attachment. Or as a result of experiencing racial trauma, or the impacts of living in our patriarchal, capitalist, oppressive society on those with GSRD (Gender, Sexual, Relationship Diversity) or other marginalised identities. It might also show up as the manifestation of unprocessed trauma by way of addiction, for example, or maybe in parenting, marriage and other significant interpersonal relationship issues.

You love God, but something still feels heavy. You struggle with self-doubt, shame, or a quiet sense of “never enough.” Relationships feel anxious or distant, and you long to feel secure with people and with God. Perhaps you serve faithfully yet feel disconnected inside. You want to trust more freely, rest without guilt, and live from a place of rooted worth rather than survival. You’re not broken — you’re carrying patterns shaped by early experiences, and you’re ready for healing.

Feeling disconnected from yourself or the life you imagined? Sometimes, life events such as separation, trauma, or loss can leave us feeling stuck. Even without a clear crisis, the weight of routine or unresolved experiences from the past can quietly shape the present, making it hard to move forward. If you're finding it difficult to navigate day-to-day life or want to reconnect with a sense of purpose, counselling can offer a space to reflect, process, and begin to shift. My approach is thoughtful and collaborative, supporting you to explore what’s holding you back and what might help you move forward.

Life can feel like a battlefield when childhood wounds, complex trauma, and the scars of abusive relationships leave their mark. You may find yourself stuck in painful cycles of overthinking every interaction, doubting your self-worth, or repeating patterns that no longer serve you. Perhaps you carry the weight of people-pleasing, emotional overwhelm, or an inner voice that never seems to quieten. You might wonder, “Why can’t I just move on?” You’re not alone.

Body Image Counsellors
How does body image affect mental health?
Poor body image can influence mental health because it can reduce self-esteem and decrease functioning in other areas of one's life. Negative body image may hinder someone's ability to perform daily tasks, including professional and social responsibilities, because they may feel self-conscious or shame surrounding their appearance; a desire to change one's body as a result of negative body image can also trigger behaviors such as extreme dieting, excessive exercise, or obsessive social media comparison. Poor body image is associated with a number of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, although many people experience negative body image even in the absence of meeting the diagnostic criteria for any mental health disorders.

What does it mean to have a positive body image?
Body image refers to how one internally perceives their appearance and internally "talks" to themself about their body. Positive body image is therefore indicative of a positive perception of one's self and positive internal self-talk that underscores one's strengths. People who have good body image often have higher self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence, and they also often recognise how external factors, such as social media or relationship patterns, can influence body image. While body image can change at different life stages and in response to various triggers, practicing self-acceptance and a body-positive mindset can help maintain a more stable sense of positive body image.

Is body image the same as self-esteem?
Body image and self-esteem are often related, but they are distinct concepts. Self-esteem is a broader term that can be shaped by a number of factors outside of body image, including one's functioning at school or in the workplace; it refers to one's capacity to handle various life challenges. Poor body image can be one way in which one's self-esteem is reduced. Reduced self-esteem as a result of poor body image can cause individuals to feel negative about their appearance, withdraw from social interactions, and/or rely on harmful behaviours as a coping mechanism. A "body positive" approach to body image therapy is therefore often used to encourage a more positive view of one's self and thus encourage better self-esteem.

What type of therapy is best to foster a positive body image?
The type of therapy best suited to improve body image depends on each person, as there is not a single therapy specific to body image improvement. That said, many individuals with poor body image benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based therapy. CBT can be used to help challenge distorted or negative thoughts about one's body, while ACT and mindfulness practices can facilitate a more positive body image through self-acceptance and identification of one's personal strengths. Regardless of treatment type, clients should look for body image therapists who encourage the development of a sense of self outside of their external appearance and help clients reduce unwanted behaviours developed as a result of poor self-esteem, such as dieting or disordered eating patterns.
