I am experienced in working with trauma, dissociation, anxiety and post-traumatic stress , sexual violence and domestic abuse, low self esteem, depression, loss and grief.
There are times when many of us feel we could benefit from emotional support and although making that first step to see a counsellor can seem enormous, it is a really positive step as talking in confidence to a professional counsellor can help bring clarity and healing and give you much needed support during a painful or anxious time. Counselling can help you make sense of your emotions and responses and empower you to make changes in your life. It facilitates the freedom to talk openly and confidentially, in a place where you will be really listened to.

I have had specialist trauma training and I am experienced with working with survivors of trauma and clients living with the effects of PTSD .
I am a relational integrative therapist. This means that you and I work in partnership to navigate a way to support you to face whichever challenges you would like to overcome. Sometimes this can be achieved through short-term work (up to 12 weeks) and sometimes a contract for much longer work will be what you need. The development of relationship between me (the therapist), and you (the client) is the driving force of how I work. Through the development of a trusted alliance we can begin to explore any vulnerabilities you bring safely in order to make sense of them together.

Hello, I'm Dr Laura Artis. My work life passions are working with PTSD , complex trauma and people who have an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), although I am able to help no matter how big or small your concerns are. It can be useful for you to think about therapy goals before starting therapy, but I can help with this if you are unsure. Often goals are around improving wellbeing and recovery, however they may be about increasing self-compassion, acceptance or gaining a better understanding of why things are as they are today. I have extensive experience working with adults, young people and families within the NHS and privately.

COUNSELLING CAN HELP YOU TELL YOUR STORY… Our lives shape our stories… Sometimes these stories cause us to feel anxious, depressed, stressed, sad or confused. At times our life stories can make us feel stuck, frightened or even lead to trauma. Sometimes we are unsure why we experience difficulties in our relationships whether personal or professional. Counselling can help you make sense of why you think, feel and act as you do. It can bring insight into patterns of relating and ways of being. It can empower you to set goals and make changes to move your life forward. Telling your story can promote growth and healing.

When life gets tough we can find ourselves feeling stressed, anxious and overwhelmed. At these times talking to someone else can be helpful to make sense of what is going on. Perhaps you are experiencing loss or bereavement, or a significant transition in your home, work or relationships. Living with uncertainty and change can stir up uncomfortable feelings in us like anxiety, depression, anger or sadness. Whatever is going on for you, I can provide you with the time and space to think things through, and together we will work to make sense of what is going on and find a way forward.

Life can become extremely tough at times and that can lead to the erosion of our sense of wellbeing. We may find ourselves feeling constantly fatigued; struggling to enjoy the things we used to, withdrawing from activities, feeling bleak about life, feeling anxious or having physical complaints such as being more frequently unwell and struggling with digestive issues or muscular aches and pains. These issues could suggest that stress is having an impact on your psychological wellbeing. It can often prove challenging to work out how you got from A to B and how to navigate a way back to A.

Hello and welcome, sometimes taking care of ourselves can be a daunting challenge, particularly when life feels overwhelming. I’m here to provide a safe space to explore feelings and work through issues however big or small these feel. Part of counselling is having a relationship where you feel able to be honest, vulnerable and yourself. This may not be instant but grows with time and from a place where you feel accepted. The counselling relationship that we can develop together builds a warm, safe and supportive space which is just for you.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
