I enjoy working with both young people and adults, and I have often been described by clients as open, honest, and approachable—qualities they have consistently valued. I have a practical, logical mindset and enjoy problem-solving. Having lived in several different countries, I’ve gained valuable insight into the experiences of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. I approach each person with curiosity and respect, asking questions to genuinely understand them rather than making assumptions. I believe my clients are the true experts in their own lives, and I see my role as guiding them toward a calmer, more balanced place.

Let me start by saying I’ve been to see a psychologist; why mention this? Two reasons: firstly, people often ask me this, so I’ll be up front about it. Secondly – maybe why people ask – having been “on the other side of the room”, I have the experience of how hard opening up can be, and how difficult it is to think about “life”. This experience has meant that back on the psych side of the room, I take a genuinely careful and non-judgmental approach to sessions. I begin by focusing on helping people feel comfortable; paradoxically perhaps, this means we are able to get to work on things quite quickly, but importantly, never rushing.

Hello, I’m Melanie.
If you’ve found your way here, you might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply exhausted from holding everything together. Many of the people I work with reach out because life no longer feels manageable, or because old experiences are beginning to resurface and make things harder.
My approach is grounded, and collaborative. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy, instead, I’ll meet you exactly where you are and help you make sense of what feels heavy or confusing.
I work primarily online with clients across the UK and abroad, with limited in-person sessions available in the Purbeck area of Dorset.

Are you seeking a space to unpack thoughts and feelings which feel hard to voice? Trying to find more capacity to understand and encounter yourself and others more deeply? Therapy offers a confidential space in which you can speak about your life’s journey, as well as what occupies your thoughts today. This can involve exploring the anxieties, relationships, dreams and experiences which are most significant for you. I practice psychoanalytic psychotherapy: this will not give you tools or advice - instead it will help you understand the parts of yourself which may feel hidden, troubling and confusing.

Life can present us with unwelcome events at any age. Professional counselling can't change these events but can provide tools and techniques to help minimise their impact. In my practise, counselling is primarily about the relationship between you and me.

I don't believe I have an ideal client. I just think anyone that has the courage to come to therapy and face up to the challenges they are facing is the kind of client I want to work with.

As a Clinical Psychologist I am passionate about working with people to address their emotional and mental health difficulties and to achieve their treatment goals. I have a particular interest in working with addictions, trauma, and anxiety disorders and as such these are my main areas of expertise. In addition to working privately, I also worked in an NHS Addictions Service until recently, predominantly with alcohol and illicit drugs, and as a result much of my work was with people with complex mental health needs.

The changing times we are living in seem to offer uncertainty meaning, for many different reasons and in all sorts of ways, we could find ourselves placed under increasing pressure and faced with unreasonable expectations. Life can suddenly be turned upside down by unexpected life altering events which you may not have the energy to deal with, feel less able to cope and may lead to impacting your relationships with family, peers and also work colleagues. Counselling can help when faced with challenges, overwhelmed by feelings of distress, confusion and anxiety about past issues or finding it hard to make decisions in the present.

As much as it can be wonderful, life can really difficult at times and this can leave us struggling with unwanted thoughts, feelings, and memories. These can easily lead to us getting stuck in a cycle of unhelpful and at times harmful patterns of behaviour that affect ourselves as well as other people. Sometimes we continue in these patterns even when we know they are not helping which can lead to more stress, frustration, and self-criticism. If this sounds like you, rest assured there is nothing wrong with you, you are just human and like all of us, are doing your best to manage life's challenges.

Substance Use Counsellors
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
