Hello my name is Joseph, and I'm a clinical psychologist. I believe that healing is possible for everyone. My practice is built on a trauma-informed and person-centered foundation of compassion and the understanding that while life can be incredibly difficult, you already carry the seeds of your own resilience. Sometimes, those seeds just need a little help to be found again. Whilst I support a range of clients with diverse needs, I have a special interest in the mental health of boys and young men, recognizing the unique societal and internal pressures this population often faces.

I don't believe I have an ideal client. I just think anyone that has the courage to come to therapy and face up to the challenges they are facing is the kind of client I want to work with.

You might look like you’re coping, but something isn’t sitting right. Stress, pressure, relationship problems, anger, anxiety, low mood, or a sense you’re stuck and don’t know why. Many of the people I work with aren’t in crisis — they’re functioning, but tired of carrying things alone. You may not want endless talk about feelings, but you do want clarity, direction, and a way to understand what’s going on beneath the surface and change it.

I offer a free 50‑minute consultation in the centre of Frome or online to see if working together feels right. Building trust can take time, and meeting in person will give you the best sense of who I am. I strive to be curious, non‑judgemental, honest and direct. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, relationship difficulties, dealing with loss, trauma or at a major turning point, therapy is your space to bring what matters most. It’s true that it often involves exploring the past, but the real challenge is learning how to live more fully in the present.

I work with adult men and women of all ages anywhere in the UK offering online video and telephone counselling. Quite a lot of us, at some stage in our lives, have been in a situation where we have nobody around us we can talk to. Even though you may have family and friends who care about you, you can still feel alone and isolated or feel that you do not want to ‘bother’ or ‘burden’ them with your feelings.

I imagine that whatever has happened to bring you here involves suffering. Whilst therapy can help to consolidate on successes and open up an even brighter future, most of us seek therapy because of a painful sense that all is not well. Whether it is a traumatic life event that brings you here, or difficult experiences from the past that continue to intrude on your present and future; current relationship difficulties or simply a nagging feeling of anxiety or depression, I can really understand your struggles and hope I can help you reconnect to what you love the most, and what can give your life the greatest purpose and meaning.

Are you in a position whereby your struggles or concerns are impacting on your day to day life? Then now could be a good time to seek some support. Often many difficulties overlap and counselling can help bring a sense of clarity by allowing you time to process, understanding, work through difficulties and overcome barriers, to live a more fulfilling life. You may be neuro-curious or have a diagnosis or traits that you want to understand and to learn about your strengths and feel empowered. You may want support with past trauma or help to work through the impact of a loved ones behaviour due to neurodivergence, addiction or trauma.

Men's Issues Counsellors
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
