Life can be a rough ride. Keeping the balance and moving forward can be a challenge. It can involve stress, anxiety, depression and much more. But I believe through psychological therapies we can learn and, in some cases even master, the art of managing life successfully. To achieve this, I practise an integrative approach that draws strength from various therapies in the field. I am a qualified Psychotherapist at a Doctoral level and I feel confident to deal with complexity . My natural inclination is to help people in need. My recent training and qualifications do enhance my inclination especially to those psychologically unwell.

Up at night with your mind racing — worrying or reliving the past? Worn out from trying to prevent the "next bad thing"? If you need controlling, checking, or avoiding things to feel safe, "it may be time to speak with an expert" could be a thought going through your mind. If you look capable on the outside but feel exhausted on the inside, let us work together so we understand the pattern beneath the worry and support you feel calmer, clearer, and more grounded. If the past keeps echoing into the present — through worry, tension, dread, or unwanted memories — let us work together so you can feel steadier without being "on guard".

Empathic and experienced psychotherapist and counsellor, based in the Bournemouth/Poole area. I work with individual adults of all ages and also within the LGBTQ+ community. My clients experience and bring a broad range of issues to therapy such as anxiety, identity issues, depression, relationship difficulties, and trauma. Trauma from our past often impacts our lives in the present and prevents us from moving forward or from being our authentic selves. Therapy cannot change the past, but it can enable us to move forward with increased resilience and can provide us with a solid foundation for lasting changes.

You may appear to be coping on the outside, yet internally feel overwhelmed, anxious, low, or emotionally exhausted. Perhaps you are carrying the impact of trauma, loss, relationship difficulties, or a persistent sense that something is not quite right. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful and self-aware, yet tired of managing alone. Therapy offers a space to pause, understand what is happening beneath the surface, and begin to move forward with greater clarity.

If you have arrived at this page it is most likely that there is something in your life that does not feel right. Let me acknowledge your courage to reach out for help as this shows that you have awareness of your need for change. My belief is that we must get our true needs met before we can effectively help others with their needs. It is perfectly normal for people to struggle at different stages of their lives – most of us do – but these struggles may make us feel very lonely and isolated. My interest is to treat you as a valuable individual and to help you manage your unique issues.

I offer a free 30 minute phone or video consultation, which may just help you without any more sessions. Many of us have experienced times when our lives can feel complex, isolated, stuck, or even completely overwhelmed. We may find ourselves looking for additional non-judgemental, experienced & professional support outside our friends & family in a caring, comfortable, & calm environment. It can be very helpful to have difficulties explored in confidence, to be listened to compassionately & being properly heard and understood in order to make sense of things, so that our choices can become clearer and our lives more fulfilling.

I am a qualified, HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist with almost a decade's worth of experience of supporting people with a broad range of mental health issues. I've found that often, people feel stuck and confused, with questions of "why?" and "how?" when their mental health troubles them. Whether it be work or relationship stress; family issues; anxieties about health or socialising; trauma or depression, I’ve found people tend to get a better understanding of what’s bothering them when they figure it out with another person. Psychology calls this “formulation” and it gives us both a clearer path towards resolving the problem.

On the outside, you seem fine - calm, capable, holding it all together. But inside, it’s a different story. I work with adults who are silently battling with pressure, anger, or a sense that something is missing from their lives. Many people I work with describe a feeling of living behind a mask, smiling, coping, keeping up appearances, while privately battling anxiety, low mood, grief, or a sense of disconnection. If that resonates with you, you're not alone. I can help. I'm Rob Upton. I specialise in working with adults and young people who are seeking relief from these pressures.

You might be here because something isn’t sitting right – in your life, relationships, or how you feel about yourself. Perhaps you’re carrying more than feels manageable, or you’re at a crossroads and unsure what comes next. At different points, we can all find ourselves feeling lost, overwhelmed or disconnected from who we are. When life feels challenging, confusing or out of balance, it can help to have a place where you don’t have to hold it all together on your own. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or not quite yourself, I offer a warm, supportive space where you can explore what’s happening and find a way forward.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
