Hi, I’m Matt. I live and work in Cheshire and South Manchester. I have worked with a diverse range of clients each with unique challenges and lived experience. Anxiety, depression and uncertainty are often natural reactions to loss and trauma that can leave us feeling ‘stuck’, isolated, deeply hurt and disconnected. Clients who come to counselling often want circumstances, relationships, or feelings in their life to change. With support and unconditional validation of your own ‘story’, I work with you to find a way forward that respects your values and beliefs, and supports your desire for meaningful change.

I can help you to feel like you develop a better more compassionate understanding of yourself and help you to feel like you are moving forward in life rather than feeling stuck and directionless.

Clients reach out to me when they have recognised that their past experiences are adversely effecting them and preventing them from leading a life which is balanced. My clients tend to have reached a point in their life where they are feeling anxious, low in mood and emotionally unregulated. They may have been diagnosed with an anxiety or mood difficulty or with PTSD, complex PTSD or BPD. The goals of my clients are to create a life where they feel they have been able to heal from their past experiences and developed a sense of mastery and effectiveness which enables them to feel they can safely move forwards and thrive.

Whether you’re looking for help with depression, anxiety, loss, or bereavement; or whether you’re struggling to change things that are causing problems in your life, such as setting boundaries, communicating yourself, addictions, or disordered eating patterns, I offer a range of counselling and psychotherapy services that can help you work through this distress. We would achieve this by first exploring what's going on for you and helping you express how you feel inside. And then we would work on the deeper underlying causes of your feelings so that you can achieve both relief and long-lasting change.

“I wish things could go back to normal!”, “I want to feel like me again!” Does this sound familiar? Many of my clients have said this in one way or another. Do you live with a sense that no one understands what you’re feeling?Sometimes it comes with a sense of shame or judgement that you can’t “just get back to normal.” Many of my clients have struggled with the effects of cancer diagnosis, others grief or loss and some have become full time carers. I offer a space for you to explore your feelings (all of them) and the support to help you make decisions about how you want to live in this new “normal”.

I offer Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT - tapping) which is like acupuncture but without the needles. You tap on specific parts of your body whilst working on difficult experiences or emotions. There are over 100 studies which found it to be effective with a large variety of difficulties but more higher quality studies are still needed. It works by activating the parasympathetic nervous system (the system that makes the body relaxed) whilst thinking about difficult things so that the brain then associates the difficulties with relaxation in the future rather than distress.

Anger Management Counsellors
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
