I understand that it can be hard to seek counselling support and talk about the difficuIt parts of life but I know that empathic listening and support can make a massive difference from my work with clients and also my own development when I have had counselling. Get in touch and start to change your life for the better. I believe strongly that access to private counselling shouldn't be limited to those with good incomes. I have some sessions available at reduced rates for clients on low incomes. Please contact me to discuss your circumstances if you are unable to afford the usual session fee.

Hi all, I am a qualified Integrative Couples Psychotherapist/Counsellor (meaning I work using Person Centred, Psychodynamic and/or CBT where required). Although, I believe that the skills and experience that I have learned are massively important, I also truly believe the 'therapeutic relationship' between me and you is just as important. People often seek counselling for a number of reasons, whether they are feeling low, want to offload or it may be something that is deeper. We will work together to see if it is something surface level or whether it is deeper and use the relevant therapy accordingly.

For the past 16 years I have offered clients a therapeutic approach that has helped them develop an inner compass; a means by which to find themselves when lost, guide them through the storm, and secure anchor in a safe harbour. It is an approach that enables the letting go of unhelpful learning and habits such as self-criticism, guilt, fear and shame; promoting the acceptance of self and other. And it is from that place that we can return to our exploring... meeting life... with compassion, curiosity and creative wonder.

Looking for a therapist is a courageous first step to make. You may be feeling uncertain of what might come next. I have found that common themes clients bring often include: • Feelings of shame and a lack of worthiness • Being very self-critical • Feeling rejected, hurt, and alone • Stuck in relationships that are not fulfilling • Feeling that your life lacks purpose • Traumatic experiences that feel like they define you • Would it help to have a space to work through these issues and to feel greater clarity in your life? If any of these issues resonate with you then you might benefit from working with myself as your therapist.

Problems often do not fit into easy categories as each person has their own individual history and way of being, and so difficulties emerge in a unique way to the individual. For example, depression or anxiety might be completely normal reactions to a difficult situation. Anxious about contacting me? I would encourage you not to be too anxious about making contact regarding psychotherapy. Feeling anxious is a normal aspect of therapy, especially at first.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
