How long have you felt anxious? Or sad? Or like your feelings do not matter? Or misunderstood? Often my clients have been feeling anxious, low, unhappy, fearful or out of control for a long time, until they discover that they hold the power to change their lives through therapeutic support. Therapy is an opportunity for you to be heard and really listened to. Some people are going through a time of low mood or life issues when they search for help, and others just feel they need space for them to work through their feelings and emotions. Feeling heard and supported may help you to feel happier and more in control of your life.

Are you feeling anxious, overwhelmed or worried ? Perhaps your mood has been low for a while and you can’t seem to shift that feeling. Sometimes life events such as losing a loved one, relationship break-ups, family problems or work issues can leave us feeling helpless. Perhaps you are considering help to untangle your thoughts. Maybe you think a lot about things that have happened in the past that still affect you. Sometimes there may be a sense that life is lacking in meaning and direction. We can all lose sight of who we really are and what we want from life.

We all have difficulties at some time in our life. Brian Leetham Counselling is about helping you to make sense of your thoughts and feelings. The memory of these experiences and the painful feelings associated with them can be felt for a long time afterwards, without being acknowledged. Unresolved feelings can result in emotional problems and/or health failure. Identifying that there is a need to seek help is the first step to recovery. Counselling can take place when a person who has an emotionally or psychologically related difficulty seeks the assistance of a counsellor to find a way to deal with it.

For 20 years I have trained in and practiced several effective self development and psychotherapeutic approaches, all of which support healing and change. I have worked within the NHS with adults with high levels of mental and emotional difficulties as well as more recently with families, children and adolescents with low to moderate difficulties in anxiety, low mood and behaviour difficulties. My work ranges from a long term psychodynamic approach to short term trauma based EMDR. Both will increase your awareness of how past experience can create unhelpful patterns in our present. Both can transform in a gentle and safe way.

I know the past couple of years have been really difficult times for everybody and there have been many changes in how we meet and talk to each other. Certainly in EMDR treatment, we have had to make rapid changes in how we think and work in order to remain available to those in need. My own experience in working online with life's complex and diverse difficulties has found that positive and effective work can equally be achieved via video sessions and has enabled me to work with so many who would otherwise find difficulty in travelling perhaps due to time, distance, work or other factors. Please email me if you wish to know more

You may be considering psychotherapy because you have a specific concern or are experiencing ‘symptoms’ that you want to address. You may be experiencing anxiety, depression, or a general sense of unease and feel life is meaningless or joyless. Perhaps you are facing some significant change in your life and unsure what to do. Or maybe you are feeling stuck finding yourself in the same place, repeating the same patterns, despite your efforts to change things. Or perhaps you want to get to know yourself more deeply and experience life more fully.

Hello my names Vivienne I am passionate in helping individuals to feel heard and understood. I want to my client to be able to open up and feel safe to explore thoughts and feelings that have been painful to visit . I want my clients to be able to express themselves in ways they may not be able to outside of the counselling environment, I want clients to leave feeling empowered to come back and unpack the things that have been holding them back in life to make decisions that benefit them and not to please others . Ultimately I want my clients to feel empowered and comfortable to be themselves in a society that demands conformity.

By creating a non-judgemental place on a weekly basis, you are able to explore your thoughts and feelings at a deeper level. We learn to sit with uncomfortable and unwanted feelings in order to understand where they really stem from. Any feelings that we repress can turn into projections, anxiety, panic attacks, even depression....etc. it is crucial that we explore why we cope the way we do and what holds us back from processing certain feelings. Keeping up with the new self-diagnosis trend I welcome neurodiversity!

Through therapy you can find out things about yourself that will help you understand what is going on for you and help to develop your own understanding and gradually learn more about your innermost parts and lead the way to greater acceptance of yourself. This is awareness and will help you feel more empowered to choose to do things differently. I believe this work is about being true to yourself rather than being who you think you 'should' be and to reclaim those parts of you that have been denied. It is both challenging and rewarding work leading to emotional healing and growth.

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
