Welcome! I have been working as a counsellor and psychotherapist since 1998 and work as a supervisor too, with practices in Exeter and London and online. I believe that many of our difficulties develop due to our early life and past experiences, including trauma. We repeat patterns in our lives hoping that things will get resolved. Sometimes these patterns are unhelpful to us. Therapy offers, in a confidential and safe space, the possible facilitation of being able to recognise these patterns and approach them from a new perspective. (more detailed information can be found on www.psycho-dynamic.co.uk)

Often people find that painful experiences and relationships in their past mean that things in the present can be complicated and sometimes hard to bear. They affect how we feel about ourselves, how we feel about the world and how we relate to other people we encounter.  If we work together we’ll explore what brought you to therapy now and think together about where the difficulties in your present might have come from. I will listen very carefully to you in order to appreciate what you are feeling so that we can begin to see how you might find a greater freedom in your life.

Since qualifying in 2016 my experience primarily consists of supporting people with: eating disorders, perinatal loss and trauma and LGBT+ related issues (including gender dysphoria, internalised homophobia or transphobia, family rejection, and the process of transitioning).
My primary training is in Dramatherapy which is a creative form of Psychotherapy. This means that in addition to talking we may also explore the use of artwork, stories, creative writing, objects and so forth. In addition, I'm a qualified MANTRA (Maudsley Model of Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults) and EMDR (a trauma focussed approach) practitioner.

Counselling can be life changing because having space to talk about how you feel is never a waste of time - but feeling anxious, depressed or unhappy is! Maybe you want to talk to someone but feel unable to share with family or friends? Perhaps you are neurodiverse or suspect you might be and would like to know how to manage your symptoms? Or maybe you just want to make sense of the feelings you are experiencing. You talk, I listen and together we find a new way of being.

I’m experienced in treating all OCD themes; POCD, ROCD, harm, contamination, scrupulosity, perinatal, sexuality etc.
Stuck in cycles of intrusive/scary taboo OCD thoughts/images and mental compulsions that feel too important to ignore? You’re constantly seeking certainty, reassurance, replaying conversations, rechecking decisions. Maybe you’re too scared to be alone with your thoughts. You’re convinced these thoughts/images mean something awful about who you are. The mental exhaustion is overwhelming - you’re living in your head. What if you don’t need to figure it all out or find the “right” answer? You need to learn that thoughts/images and anxiety can’t actually harm you and discover practical tools to break free from OCD’s grip.

People often reach out to therapy when they are ready for change. Some people do not even know what those changes might be yet. Your journey with therapy is very personal and you might be interested in understanding yourself better, or simply want a safe and confidential space to talk, get things off your mind. Whatever your thoughts are right now, I imagine you are hoping for something to be different in your life. I work extensively with Attachment, Trauma, Grief, Anxiety, Depression, Chronic Illness and Chronic Pain. How different could your life feel if you could develop the understanding needed to reconnect with yourself?

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
