feeling sad, anxious, depressed?
My approach is relational and depth-focused. I’m interested in understanding not just what is happening now, but how earlier experiences and established patterns may be shaping your current difficulties. Therapy offers a space to slow things down, reflect, and make sense of experiences in a way that can lead to meaningful change.

Struggling with anxiety, work/exam stress, self-esteem issues, feeling out of control or that you've 'lost yourself'?
I provide talking therapy and, for youngsters, creative play therapy. I offer a mix of person-centred therapy and CBT, plus lots of positive affirmations and work on self-esteem and self-care. I also use DBT skills (inc. mindfulness), and all of these techniques help clients explore and understand their feelings, and realise their options moving forwards.

I have 9 years of experience working with a variety of difficulties including depression, anxiety and trauma.
Therapy approaches are often ‘integrated’ to suit an individual’s needs. Just as each person is different, so are their needs. Therefore, we can begin with an initial consultation meeting to understand together what you are going through and what would be helpful to you. I invite you to contact me by telephone or email to talk and find a convenient time.

You might be here because something feels stuck — perhaps you've been carrying anxiety, sadness, or a sense of low self-worth far longer than you would like to admit.
Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences — particularly early relationships — continue to shape how we think, feel, and relate to others today. Rather than focusing only on symptom management, I invite you to think about the deeper roots of your difficulties, often leading to more lasting and meaningful change.

I specialise in working with adults who have been affected by trauma, which could include low self esteem, anxiety, people-pleasing, avoidance, overthinking, struggling with overwhelming feelings, or reacting more strongly than expected to situations.
Are you struggling with overwhelming feelings that don’t quite make sense? Do you find yourself reacting more strongly than expected, or often feel physically tense? Perhaps past experiences keep surfacing unexpectedly, leaving you unsettled or on edge. Sometimes, the things we’ve been through can affect the way we have learnt to respond, which is our brain and body’s way of protecting ourselves from being hurt by such experiences again. This can lead us to think the worst, blame ourselves for things going wrong, or see things as more dangerous than they really are. We might also avoid situations, or keep busy to avoid thinking.

I work with anxiety and depression and aim to build a trusting environment where you can develop self-awareness to understand the causes of concerns and confidently set goals and new positive behaviours.
Hi, I am Russell and I run a private counselling practice called Woven Counselling. I believe in offering a therapeutic experience that is as unique and individualised as each person who walks through my door. Woven Counselling draws on the multi-layered aspects of therapy. A process of exploration and the unravelling of the many tightly woven threads of life that can cause challenge and conflict. These threads include our own unique experience of childhood, as a young person the process of forming a unique identity and seeking where we belong, and as an adult a culmination in all that has gone before that shapes our view view.

My work is centred around adults experiencing a variety of depression and anxiety-related challenges, and I tailor my approach to each individual because no two people’s experiences are the same.
As a therapist, I believe that each of us holds a deep knowledge of ourselves. We are, in many ways, our own greatest resource when it comes to understanding and improving our mental health. However, the skills and tools to navigate this process aren’t always something we’re taught, and there are moments in life where we all need support. That’s where I come in—to help guide and empower you on your journey to becoming your own therapist. Together, we’ll work collaboratively to unlock your potential, as there is no greater gift you can give yourself than the ability to care for your mental health with confidence and clarity.

I work with individuals and couples struggling with painful relationship patterns, emotional overwhelm, anxiety, rejection, and low self-esteem.
I work with individuals and couples who function really well and appear successful on the outside, yet privately feel lost, burnt-out and lonely. I highlight the deeper patterns and attachment wounds driving persistent cycles. Perhaps you're caught in the same conflicts in relationships - one pursues while the other withdraws, leaving you feeling rejected and more like roommates than lovers. We make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface, so that connection and trust feel possible again. You'll learn how to set safe boundaries, rebuild trust and intimacy, improve communication, and be yourself more fully in relationships.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
