Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counselling in West Wickham
Most recently I have been working with adults in the private sector and specialise in trauma, perinatal, eating disorders, OCD, depression and anxiety.
We all need to talk at times and sometimes we all need to take time out to work things through. This is a brave step, so it's important to know who I am and what I can offer; I am an experienced BABCP accredited CBT Psychotherapist and an accredited EMDR Practitioner, I also interweave 3rd Wave CBT techniques including Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Schema therapy into my clinical treatment. I believe that ultimately we are all human beings that feel pain and require compassion and non-judgemental support.

I am a psychotherapist qualified to Master level(s) in both psychodynamic counselling (MA) and cognitive behavioural therapy (MSc). How I work with you will be dependent on your needs and goals for counselling. We will identify this together during an assessment where I will aim to understand more about you, the challenges you have experienced and the particular issues you are struggling with. Our therapeutic relationship will be central to the healing that is possible for you in counselling. It will be a space where you will be 'heard' with empathy and without judgement and where the profound work of insight and change can occur.

You may be considering psychotherapy for a specific concern, or 'symptom', that you would like to address (e.g. anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, etc.). Or you may have a specific question, or life transition, that needs attention. You may find you're repeating the same 'patterns' over and again. It may be that you have a general sense of uneasiness, meaninglessness, or a lack of playfulness in life. Or perhaps you want to get to know yourself more deeply and experience life more fully. Of course, you may also feel unsure about why exactly you'd like to talk to a psychotherapist, but still want to.

Are you worried or overwhelmed? I support carers and individuals living with and grappling with the uncertainties of cancer, and offer a space for you away from friends/family. Do you need somewhere to come and just be? I work with you as you are without shame and provide ongoing support when perhaps daily life is really hard. If you want to we can look together at any distressing emotions and make sense of where they might come from. Clients usually find that making the decision to come to counselling gives hope, a sense of connection and feelings of being understood.

If you're in a couple, chances are your relationship is in crisis: you and your partner have drifted apart, you don't understand each other any more, and communication is a challenge. I can help you step outside of the patterns that lead to conflict, indifference, and misunderstanding. You'll feel closer to your partner, rediscover yourself, and build a future that honours both your needs.
If you're a woman, gay, NB or POC, chances are you've been systemically disempowered. You feel invisible, exhausted, and what you want seems constantly out of reach. I can help you learn the mechanics of power to build the life of your dreams.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
