Anxiety, low mood, stress or just that feeling of being "stuck" can make life really difficult sometimes. Life events such as bereavement, job loss, relationship problems, divorce, trauma or illness can leave us feeling uncertain, down, hopeless, and anxious. This is where I can help you. I have a wealth of life experience and together we can tackle whatever problems you have and get you to a place where life is easier for you and you are not only happier in yourself, but more confident and better equipped to face whatever challenges may lie ahead.

I feel successful counselling is built on a foundation of a good therapeutic relationship. I will work with you and try to build that relationship. I will do this by treating everything we talk about as confidential, being honest, genuine, respectful and non-judgemental. This will build trust between us and of the counselling process, which will enable you to explore your feelings and thoughts at your own pace and in a safe space. During counselling we will work together to build those foundations which will enable, underpin and reinforce a productive therapeutic relationship that can help you to discover solutions.

Sometimes you need someone to understand, sometimes you just need someone to listen. Other times you may need someone to help you understand yourself, who you are and why you do what you do.

You may be functioning well on the outside — working, coping, appearing “fine” — but inwardly feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or emotionally disconnected. Therapy offers a space to understand what’s driving those patterns and why they’ve become so hard to shift. I work with people who want more than symptom relief — they want clarity, self-understanding, and real change in how they feel about themselves and others.

Clients often seek my help to find relief from negative feelings and experiences of themselves and their relationships, both past and present. These experiences are often coupled with a feeling of being blocked, reluctant to engage with emotions that may be painful or sometimes feeling nothing at all. My clients report that these experiences are interrupting their ability to flourish, to truly feel at home with themselves, to create direction and purpose, or build and maintain positive relationships. The main outcomes for my clients are self-acceptance, increasing authenticity and agency and a reduction in negative feelings.

Hello, my name is Matthew, I am a qualified integrative therapist working online via Zoom from my therapy space in East London. I have the conviction that it is possible to make sense of our lives and doing so makes good sense. Clients I meet often have a sense of despair around aspects of their lives and find themselves being ‘fed up of being fed up’. This despair however can serve as a useful catalyst in the quest for healing and understanding. Therapy is an opportunity to take stock of our lives and work out what we want them to be, to face ourselves head on.

We all go through times when some additional support could be useful. Whether a specific issue has led you here today, or a wish to explore difficulties in your early life and their impacting on you today, I might be the right person to help. I have extensive experience of working in NHS and charity settings as well as abroad. Aside from my private practice I currently work as Principal Psychologist / Clinical Lead in an NHS service. I have worked with a wide range of difficulties and have most experience in working with complex trauma, interpersonal difficulties, mood management, and autism spectrum conditions.

Are you wearing many different masks, because you long to be accepted? Keeping up the pretence is tiring isn’t it? You really want to be your true self, but somewhere down the line, you concluded that the real you is not good enough, is not worthy to be loved and find happiness. It can take a lot of courage to share your innermost thoughts and feelings with someone, particularly if you have had past experiences, where you did not feel heard or listened to; felt dismissed or your trust was broken. Trust is built over time and I want you to know that we can go at your own pace in therapy. I will accept you for who you are.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
