I work using a combination of Humanistic and Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) approaches. I believe that this offers you the best of both worlds. You may feel your life has lost meaning and this can lead to depression, stress or anxiety. This can sometimes be due to unhelpful or negative thinking (cognitive) patterns and together we can work on these. Talking to a professional counsellor can help you process those feelings and move towards a more contented life. I will not judge you and I will always work at your pace. I offer a careful balance of support and gentle challenge.

Life can be really tough sometimes. During difficult periods it can help to have someone to talk to, a different relationship to that of friends and family. I can offer a safe, confidential space offering a warm, empathic, supportive and non-judgemental environment for us to explore what’s going on for you. The trust and relationship that you have with your therapist is so important and will be the centre of our work together. I am an integrative counsellor trained in humanistic, behavioural and psychodynamic approaches. Working with these different modalities means that we can find the most suitable approach for you.

Hello and welcome. I offer a safe and supportive space to explore whatever feels important to you, whether that is thoughts, feelings or difficult life experiences. Using compassionate and somatic inquiry, grounded in mindfulness practice, we work with whatever arises in an accepting and non-judgemental way. Through these explorations we can start to gain insights and clarity into stuck patterns and behaviours which may no longer serve us. In doing so, we give space for new possibilities to emerge in how we live, relate and move through the world, allowing for a greater sense of authenticity, ease and freedom.

Have you been feeling stuck, or in a low mood recently? Has life been getting on top of you? Or has a particular unexpected life event completely thrown you - leaving you questioning everything? Sometimes we can feel angry, low, anxious or tearful and we need to seek some professional support to help us develop a clear perspective and a way through to coping again. One client I supported said: "Seeing Catherine was without a doubt one of the best things I've done in my life. Her calm bespoke guidance & wisdom has helped me feel human and made me a better father and husband."

I accompany individuals before, during, and after pregnancy.
I am Professor Michael Atar, a psychoanalytic parent-infant psychotherapist. I work with families, parents, carers, and their children, drawing on my expertise from various life experiences such as my medical background, working as a paediatric dentist for over 25 years, and being a father of a large family with children of various ages. Whilst I do adopt a psychoanalytic observational stance, I don’t approach therapy from the position of “expert”. My belief in therapy focuses on awareness, understanding, and gentle support. As the word therapy suggests facilitating and serving, my work emphasises a collaborative experience.

Perhaps you are looking for help to find your bearings while going through a time of crisis and/or you who wish to examine your life more fully to address issues that have affected you over time. With the help of therapy, you can start understanding your inner world and thought patterns more clearly and remove the feelings of anxiety and worry from your mind. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy aims to go deep into your emotions, understanding how your early life has formed strategies that might contribute to unhelpful patterns in adulthood with the aim of gradually removing distress, helping you to live a fuller life.

An area of particular interest for me is offering support to women and men who may struggle during the perinatal period.
but can also be a challenging time for many parents who may experience worry, anxiety or symptoms of post-natal depression while going through this major transition in their lives. Many people may feel daunted by the process of seeking support for their difficulties, because therapy involves sharing difficult emotions with the aim of challenging sometimes

I am an experienced clinical psychologist specialising in the perinatal period, which is the time around pregnancy, birth and the early years of parenthood.
Becoming parent is often described as one of life's most joyful milestones, yet the reality can be far messier. It's a time of profound change that can stir up many unexpected feelings. Adjusting to new routines and relationship changes can be hard, often bringing feelings of loneliness, loss of identity, anxiety, or anger. Sometimes, painful memories from your own childhood can show up in unexpected ways during early bonding, making it difficult to connect and be present. These experiences are more common than you might think. The transition to parenthood is a journey, and it's okay if it doesn't feel natural right away.

Alongside private practise, I have extensive experience working for The Parenting Project, seeing a range of clients struggling with nuerodiversity, identity issues, post and prenatal depression and anxiety, general anxiety, OCD, PTSD, child abuse and trauma, sexual abuse and depression.
Do you find yourself repeating the same patterns and behaviours? Perhaps for years, even decades? Is the simple act of getting through the day (and night) becoming unmanageable and overwhelming? Or perhaps you feel numb, stuck, confused even? Perhaps you do not even know where to begin or what you are looking for? Are you finally ready to let go of what no longer serves you and embrace challenge, change, and desire - rejuvenating your relationships not only with others, but with yourself?

When life gets tough having someone who listens and assists you through the difficult feelings and challenges can enable you to understand what is happening and help you to move forward. Whether you have specific goals, or just need a safe space to talk, let’s explore if therapy may be beneficial. People often come to therapy after grappling with their problems or difficulties for a while and often on their own. Relationship problems, traumas or personal dilemmas are very common in today’s busy world. You do not need to suffer in silence. Talking to a trained therapist may be the first important step towards a more meaningful life.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?
The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?
Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?
A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
