We all desire meaningfulness in our lives and we usually seek out the healing of therapy at times when life may feel challenging, difficult, directionless or overwhelming in some way. Life contains setbacks and suffering which can feel painful and we may develop strategies to avoid and bypass such feelings. The process of therapy is to gently explore in the present the way we feel about ourselves and our lives and to bring embodied awareness to what obscures the inherent wholeness at our core.

Hi, I'm Julie, and I am passionate about working with people who have experienced abuse or trauma, whether it be sexual, physical or emotional. When we experience trauma we lose part of who we truly are because of the after effects, such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, flashbacks and dissociation (when we feel distanced from our emotions or ‘spaced out’, as if we’re living on autopilot). I love helping people rediscover who they really are by creating an environment in which they feel safe and completely accepted. I don't analyse you but with careful listening will know what we need to work on.

Are you feeling anxious, depressed, stressed, insecure, or overwhelmed by your emotions? Or are you looking for someone who will listen and be non judgemental and to whom you can talk in confidence about issues that are bothering you that would be difficult to share with friends or family members? Your feelings may be related to a bereavement or loss, the effects of abuse, relationship issues, or a major life change or may be related to something unresolved from the past. You may also be seeking support in setting goals and moving on in a positive way. These (and others) are areas in which I am well experienced.

Working from a converted coach house in a quiet spot on the outskirts of Wedmore, I offer both long-term and short-term counselling. My aim is to provide a warm, confidential and non-judgemental space in which you can feel safe and understood and where you can explore the things that feel important to you. I work creatively and am pro-active, but am never directive and am not limited to just one way of working. Quite the reverse. I will recognise you as an individual with unique thoughts, feelings, needs, wants, experiences and circumstances and, as an integrative practitioner will tailor my work accordingly

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
