Hello and welcome to my page. I recognise the courage it takes to approach a therapist and would like to help you. Over ten years of practising, therapy has shown me time and time again how people can overcome their problems successfully and live fulfilled and happy lives. In today's pressured world, mental health problems are all too common. Maybe you're struggling with depression or stress or the problem is anxiety, or trauma, or grief. Perhaps you're struggling with a habit that started off as a pleasure but turned into an addiction over lockdown. Whatever the mental health problem, talking therapy can help.

Finding your way here takes courage. Whether it was a moment of crisis, a quiet sense that something isn't right, or simply a feeling that you deserve more from life. Life can shake us in ways we never expected. Anxiety, grief, anger, emptiness, or a disconnection from the life force that makes us feel alive. Sometimes what we experience isn't just one feeling, but many, pulling in different directions, often at the same time. Parts of us that long to be seen, others that protect, withdraw, or fight. When these parts are in conflict or feel disconnected from each other, life can feel fragmented.

I am particularly interested in the mind-body connection and its role in healing unresolved distress. Our bodies recall our emotional pain with more clarity than our brains can remember. In therapy, the safe and confidential relationship we develop will allow you to explore your present-moment experiences. Working collaboratively and creatively, at a pace that feels right for you, we will pay holistic attention to your feelings, thoughts and physical sensations. As your awareness, understanding and compassion grows, this greater clarity can empower you to move towards connection, wholeness and wellbeing.

I draw on psychodynamic understanding, humanistic, relational therapy, somatic awareness, and practical coping strategies, tailoring the work to each individual rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Hi, my name is Tarana. I am an experienced counsellor and mental health practitioner. I work mainly with adults who are living with the impact of trauma or difficult past experiences. This usually shows up as overthinking, emotional overwhelm, people-pleasing, low self-worth, difficulties with trust or boundaries, or feeling like you are spiralling and constantly on edge. You may also be navigating identity, cultural expectations, migration, or the experience of feeling caught between different worlds.

I use a range of approaches, including gentle breathing and somatic techniques to meet your individual needs so you can make the changes you want to make.
People seek out counselling or psychotherapy for many different reasons. You may be at a point of transition or crisis in your life; perhaps you are not sure how to move forward or you feel disorientated and uncertain. You may have had difficult, traumatic or upsetting experiences along the way, recently or in the past; experiences that have left you doubting yourself and who you are, unable to trust or that make it hard to move forward in your life. I have over 30 years experience as a psychotherapist and counsellor helping people with a wide range of issues. I offer both long term and time limited work depending on your needs.

It’s normal, at some point, to get stuck, or to struggle facing life's challenges. Sometimes we know exactly what’s wrong but at other times we might just have a nagging sense that something isn’t quite right. Therapy can help by supporting you to explore the roots of your distress, understand more clearly what’s keeping you stuck, and create new ways to think about yourself and your relationship roles and patterns. By uncovering the obstacles holding you back, you can learn to problem-solve, make better choices, practise healthier coping strategies, and turn your goals into realities to find a greater sense of peace and fulfilment.

I have a special interest and passion in working creatively, using somatic approaches & embodiment practices.
I work in a way that’s person-centred, integrative, inclusive and relational. I always place your needs and values at the centre of our therapeutic work, while embracing your freedom and autonomy. I take an affirmative approach in encouraging you to bring any and all parts of your unique self; I take care to not pathologise or criticise you. I work very relationally, and I believe therapy can only be effective if there’s a strong therapeutic relationship at the heart of it. I’m interested in exploring what goes on in the therapeutic process and how this may mirror dynamics you’re experiencing in your wider life and relationships.

Somatic Counsellors
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
