Counselling for Seniors in Wellington

I’m Karen Janas, an integrative counsellor working with adults, couples, and young people experiencing a wide range of emotional and relational difficulties. You may be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or exhausted, perhaps holding everything together for others while inside you feel unheard or stuck in patterns you don’t fully understand. You might be living with low mood or depression, navigating burnout, grief, menopause, or struggling with difficult relationships, including your relationship with food or with yourself. Life may feel more about surviving than living, and you’re tired of carrying it all alone.

Are you in a role where pressure or exposure to trauma is just ‘part of the job’? You’re relied upon to step in when others wouldn’t, but lately it’s felt a struggle. You’re still functioning, but have noticed you can’t switch off, struggle to sleep and things that never bothered you, are. You feel stuck in a cycle, but asking for help feels like defeat. Burnout isn’t weakness. Repeated exposure to stress or trauma accumulates in the body, and even the most resilient of people will experience the impact of being on high alert for too long. That shift can feel unnerving when your identity is built around competence and coping.

Some days it's not one big thing. It's just a quiet sense that something isn't quite right. A feeling of being a little lost, a little flat, a little disconnected from yourself — and not quite knowing where to start. You don't have to have a crisis to deserve support. You just have to be human. Like a tower of stones, we all lose our balance sometimes. We wobble, we fall, we wonder if we have it in us to begin again. But the capacity to find your way back — to reconnect with what feels steady and true inside you — is already there. It just needs to be remembered.

You may be someone who has learned to function under sustained pressure. Responsibility comes easily; asking for help does not. Over time, this can leave your nervous system exhausted, vigilant, and stuck in survival mode. Many people I work with are highly capable and dependable, managing a great deal while outwardly functioning well. They often reach out not because everything has collapsed, but because something has become unsustainable. Sleep may be disrupted, anxiety constant, and the body may signal distress through pain, digestive issues, fatigue, or flare-ups that no amount of effort seems to resolve.

You're coping. But for how much longer? From the outside, you seem to have it together. You manage the workload, solve problems and keep going. But underneath, the pressure is taking its toll. Perhaps you're forgetting things, lying awake at night, losing patience more easily, or wondering why life feels harder than it used to. You don't need someone to tell you to meditate, exercise more or simply take a break. You need someone who understands the reality of carrying responsibility while quietly running on empty.

As a Clinical & Educational Psychologist, I work with adults and children with a range of difficulties who want to improve their lives. Clients I see struggle with attachment trauma, anxiety, depression, physical symptoms and self-criticism. They often feel, anxious, drained, live with pain, gastro problems, phobias and/or PTSD,ADHD, or FND symptoms. Relationships are challenging, and trusting others to access help is a struggle. Through our work, we develop greater awareness of how they relate to others in intimate relationships, and the impact this has on their body and mind, which helps them relate to themselves differently too..

I am a calm, approachable, empathic, and grounded counsellor with 12years' experience. I have found that no matter who you are, what you have been through or are currently going through in life being genuinely heard and understood by someone else is a deeply healing process which often brings relief, calmness, and clarity. Wrestling with intense thoughts and feelings on your own can be utterly exhausting and can often leave you feeling stuck or going round in circles but having a safe and confidential space to share with a trusted professional can lead to surprising breakthroughs and a deeper understanding of yourself & your issues.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counselling for elderly different from counselling for other age groups?
In general, counselling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialise in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counselling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counsellors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counsellors specialising in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counsellors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
