Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Counselling in Warrington

Hello, I’m Debbie, and it’s a pleasure to introduce myself. I hold a First-Class Honours degree in Counselling and have more than 20 years of experience supporting children, teenagers, and young people across both education and social care settings. Throughout my career, I have seen first-hand the many challenges young people face, as well as the strength and resilience they can discover when offered the right support at the right time. I believe every child and young person deserves a safe, respectful, and understanding space in which to be heard, and this belief lies at the heart of my work.

Life can feel overwhelming at times, and reaching out for support isn’t always easy. You may be feeling anxious, stuck or disconnected from yourself. You may have spent so long looking after everyone else that you've forgotten to make time for yourself. Therapy offers you the opportunity to pause, discover what you need and reconnect with yourself. Whatever has brought you here, you don’t have to face it alone. I offer a warm, supportive space for adults, where we can gently explore what you're going through at your own pace. Alongside support, I can also gently challenge unhelpful patterns or beliefs when it feels okay to do so.

I have worked as a trauma therapist in sexual assault and i am trained in EMDR and Brainspotting CBT and DBT.
I believe that the therapeutic relationship is the most important aspect of therapy. To provide a space where you feel safe, respected and never judged. I am an trained in various therapies including cbt therapy. Sometimes life throws us a curve ball and getting up everyday and doing everyday things is a struggle sometimes we need someone to walk through the dark times with us and to remind us we are not alone and things can and will get better. I am also a qualified coach and work with women that have experienced abuse. Alongside my therapy practice, i am also a supervisor and have 22 years of experience supporting therapists.

I can tailor my approach and use DBT skills throughout where needed.
Do you ever experience feelings of hopelessness, being self critical, or having limiting beliefs and thoughts? Do you experience reduced energy or motivation? Do your worries and panic hold you back or cause crippling spiralling thoughts about the future? Maybe you have a specific phobia or fear, restrictive and controlling patterns of eating, obsessive behaviours or urges you feel compelled to complete? Maybe you have a diagnosed neurodevelopmental condition such as Autism, ADHD, learning needs etc and struggling with the impact of this? These are just some things I can help with and adopt a trauma informed approach to all my work.

Psychologist, PsychD, HCPC - Clin. Psych.
I use a range of evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Video Interaction Guidance (VIG), Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy ( DBT) and Dyadic Developmental Practice (DDP).
My aim is to help explore the difficulties that individuals and families are wanting support with and then be honest and transparent in the ways in which I am able to help. I am able to offer individual sessions, family sessions and a mix of both when required. I recognise that engaging with someone new can be daunting for young people and their families and therefore initially I prioritise helping people to feel comfortable to share their problems. I am able to assess and contribute towards assessment for Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) alongside a multidiscplinary team.

Dialectical Behaviour (DBT) Counsellors
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behaviour and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behaviour, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioural change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behaviour; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
