Are you autistic or wondering if you might be? Maybe your child has received an autism diagnosis or are you waiting for an assessment? Are you feeling unsure what to do next and struggling to find support? Are you or your child experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, melt downs or challenging behaviour? An autism diagnosis is the beginning. There is so much information but no one to guide you through it all. Family and friends try to understand, school try to help but don’t always get it right. You may feel alone, isolated and lonely, unsure who to trust and where to turn.

Our counselling offers help in addressing the difficult areas of your life. This might involve loss and grief, relationship troubles or problems at work. Equally, there are times when the cause is not clear but you still feel something is wrong. Colleagues, family and friends can be a great source of support but it's not always easy to confide in those closest to you. At times like these, talking to someone who is not personally involved can make a difference. A professional counsellor will listen to you without making judgments and can help you find new resources within yourself.

When we feel stuck, experience difficult emotions, or the challenges we have are distressing, finding a space to work through and move beyond what has led you to experience those difficulties can feel overwhelming in itself. Through working together with you, I look to create a space where you can explore, make sense of and manage distress, address challenges and build psychological well-being, while supporting you to build confidence to move beyond your difficulties.

What do you need? It is sometimes helpful to ask yourself - "What are my main goals as I go for counselling? What is important to me right now? How would I like to change?" Often all someone needs is some quality time and space to be able to be themselves, and be heard - not feeling judged no matter what they say, and feel some compassion from somebody who cares. In the busy and sometimes harsh world in which we live, I provide that space for you to come as you are, work with your expressed goals, rediscover a new way forward, and deal with the problems you are experiencing. Often people find a positive change in this scenario.

Welcome, I’m Eilidh. I am a Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor, offering counselling to both adults and children. Life is rarely travelled without experiencing a period of difficulty. These can be as short as a day, or sometimes for what seems like forever. The impact and cause can be obvious and in-the-present, or sometimes less so, perhaps from your distant past. No matter the cause, you may be left depressed, anxious, or consumed by negative thoughts. The onset of feeling stuck and alone, not knowing what to do, often accompanies these emotions.

Psychotherapeutic counselling sessions can help with your mental health needs which require regular maintenance. My sensitive, yet challenging approach to counselling is strengthened through developing a strong working relationship between therapist and client, encouraging those to move from where they are now. Enabling clients to explore their own options, reach their own decisions and to act upon them accordingly, making effective decisions which lead to positive changes in their attitude and/or behaviour.

Are you looking for a counsellor who can offer creative interventions to help with feelings when words just don't seem to be enough? Then pop me a message to have a chat about setting up a session to see if you feel like I might be the right counsellor for you. It can be a tough decision to make to start counselling and then choosing the right counsellor can feel overwhelming too. There is no obligation to set up sessions unless you feel i am right for you.

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
