I am an integrative counsellor with experience in both the private and NHS sectors, working with adults and young people. In my experience, many clients come for counselling for help with depression and anxiety caused by difficulties within relationships, friendships, work-based stress as well as isolation and loneliness. By gently encouraging and challenging them to face up to their fears and concerns, they achieve greater insight and self-knowledge and gain a larger perspective on their situation. Through this they come to realise that there are other options and choices available to them through which they may improve well-being

Let's be honest - You are here because would like something to be different. You are ready for change. You know the pain of over-giving. The ache of people-pleasing. The weight of high-functioning. And the silent exhaustion of always saying, “I’m fine,” when inside, you are actually anything but.

My primary focus is working with adults who have experienced trauma or loss. This includes victims of violence, those grieving significant losses, and people who've been diagnosed with frightening illnesses. I also specialise in those traumatised on the job, like medical professionals, first responders, and journalists. Clients tend to come to me feeling disconnected from their lives, from other people, and from who they used to be. They often say they feel out of control of their moods and feelings, and are looking to regain that sense of agency.

I also bring elements of Compassion-Focused Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy where needed.
I make 3 promises to my clients: 1) They will be seen in the context of their lives... the problem is the problem, the person is the person. 2) We will use the words, terms and language that feel right by you. 3) We will figure out your values as a means to know how to go forward, like a ship changing course in a storm.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Counsellors
How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?
The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?
Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?
A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
